Pins stopped growing
    #7969142 - 02/02/08 03:10 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I am growing on a brf cake that that I colonized in a tall drinking glass. I waited until there was mycelium on all of the substrate but it was not completely white like when using a smaller substrate. I dunked it for 24 hours after removing it from the glass and put it in my fruiting chamber. A week later hyphal knots began to appear and also very small pins. Its been almost 2 weeks now and the pins haven't grown any larger. Is this a problem?

I fan them once or twice a day. 2 inches of perlite. I mist the walls every 3 or 4 days(I dont have anything to read the humidity). The temp is about 72 and I dont give them any light : \.

It's a huge problem! Once the knots formed into primordia, and then into pins they should have been done 2 days after that. You should have already been munching long ago. Answer shroomiegirl's question and we'll be better able to help.

Do you have holes on the side of the FC? start giving them 12/12 light. 12 on 12 off. Your perlite needs a little air current to wick the moisture into the FC. That is a good start.

I just found a way to give them light. I just noticed that in my closed it uses flourscent light and so I moved them up on a shelf right by the light and I do have several holes in the sides of the fc. Hopefully the light will help the pins and maybe raise the temperate a little bit.

Your temperatures are just fine. 72-75 is PERFECT! It's your humidity and FAE that you need to work on. If your manually fanning, then you need to be fanning a MINIMUM OF 3 times a day 6 to 8 times would be even better, but I know how that can be a hassle given the other responsibilities we have throughout the day. Keep up the light misting, (You're doing good there). Things should start speeding up from here on.

In my cakes I've been pretty much spraying them till they beg for mercy from distances which equate to point blank range . It's a little spray bottle that can hold like 2 cups or so and I generally empty about a third of it each time I spray down my cakes and walls of my FC. I've have sprayed them from distances as close at about 6 inches as well as misting to death over the top. My analog hygrometer I have sitting flat on it's back on my perlite reads 90 nowadays but I've also got a mushroom about 5 inches long and growing so I'm not complaining.

I dont think its a good idea to mist water directly on cakes or to place them directly on perlite because It makes it really easy for contaminates to grow with all the excess water. Alot of my fist cakes got infected because I read that placing them directly on perlite is good but it made green mold grow on the bottom of my cakes and I later read that it should not be done. I also heated my fc with some lights that made it too hot, probibly in the 90's and I think that too helped to contribute to post-colonization contamination.
