Good coffee?

I haven't had good coffee in awhile. I like my shit straight strong and black, so it's damn easy for me to tell when coffee tastes like shit.
8 o'clock sucks. Starbucks sucks. Caribou sucks. Harmony bay sucks. Of course, maxwell house sucks. Arabica REALLY sucks.
The best coffee I've had was from Panera Bread. It was hazelnut flavored or something and DAMN is it good. But I hate supporting Panera, because they have this uppity "health food" attitude when their food isn't much better than other fast food shit. And I have problems walking with bakeries (gluten intolerance). And there isn't a panera near here anyway.
The other best coffee I've had was a mystery coffee some lady let me have when I walked into a real estate office for some coffee. Too bad I didn't ask what it was.
I'm not a connisoeur so I don't know what to look for and describe for flavor. All I know is that I like something that's rich, coffee-like, and doesnt taste like yak piss.

I was about to suggest Yak Piss until I saw the last line of your post.
I would say get nice equipment to start.

I would suggest a French press or a mocha pot.

Can any of that be done by hand? I don't trust paying high dollar equipment to do simple tasks for me.

This is a mocha pot. Very easy to use and you can get one for a reasonable price but I would suggest getting the stainless over the aluminum
This is the French press. Bodum makes one the best and I have found them at TJMaxx for about $20.00

A French Press costs ~20 dollars. It makes delicious, creamy coffee. It is really small too and doesn't require filters or any attachments.
Make sure you buy coarse ground coffee, not fine (I'm guessing you don't own a grinder).

I have heard you can roast your own with a hot air popcorn popper. How do you do it?

if you have access to Thai grocery - get powered 'loose' thai coffee - it is super strong, mellowed with rice and soybeans, but it does not take away the caffiene jolt. a little sweet palm sugar and soy milk (the traditin is condensed milk) and voila - awesome coffe. ALSO; If you cant get to a Thai shop - try Bustello coffee instant if you cant brew coffee- but brewed is best. Its Spanish espresso, not bitter but very strong. American coffee = weak dishwater.

there's a service out there called la columbe that delivers coffee to your door. Some of the best ive had and they have a pretty decent selection too.
