Since the seventies many researchers have tried to link a small gland that lies right behind the traditional third eye point to psychic functioning. This, the pineal gland, has been described as a wonder of psychic power and essential to all real psychic functioning. When brain scans have been done, primarily active magnetic resonance imaging, or AMRI for short, this gland does not seem to respond much at all to attempts to interact with the world on a psychic level.

However, just behind the pineal gland at the very front most part of the brain, lies an area known as the pre-frontal cortex. This is the area of the brain that is responsible for intense concentration and the ability to pay attention to what is happening right now. When AMRI have been taken of people meditating or trying to focus on psychic information, this area glows with activity.

So while the "Third Eye" may not literally be a psychic center, it is clear that activity in this region is still needful for real psychic functioning to take place. The third eye exists. It is just slightly different than we may have thought.

Altered, or anyone else for that matter with an interest in the pineal gland:

What are your thoughts on this article?

Belly button? If you get much lower you'll be talking about sole. That's a different topic I think.

It's a metaphor for Insight. In-sight. It is Intuition tuned to a higher degree and allows comprehension of universal ideas. In Kabbalism it is equivalent to the spheres of Binah (Understanding) and Chokma (Wisdom). The spheres do not exist spatially any more than 'astral organs' called chakras exist in the 'astral body.' The spheres are 'spheres of influence,' concentrations as it were of psychospiritual experiences. Maps are great, I love them, I've written about them, but maps are metaphorical means for organizing inner experiences usually in a hierarchy from external and multiplicity to internal and unifying.

once on lsd with my brother (my brother triggers deep experiences for me - call it the connection) i closed my eyes and looked up... a tunnel opened and i started pouring out of myself. i became the tunnel and my imagination crystalized. all around the tunnel my thoughts and imagination would form and take the shape of the most vivid and complex geometric patterns and images. i was in control of these images as i flew through this tunnel.

before this happened my brother and i were sitting down having a conversation. our words and thought process started dissolving and we could see and feel them leave us. after this we were walking down the road and had a collective obe, i looked behind me and saw my body walking then shatter into pieces. my brother saw this trail of me walking, as well as shatter and dissolve.

'third eye', i don't know.
