Mac 10 Self Powered Hepa as a flowhood?
    #7968486 - 02/02/08 12:29 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Do you think that a 2'x2' Envirco "Mac 10" turned on its side so its blowing horizontally would make an effective flowhood for some agar work?

http://www.envirco.com/PDF/Mac10_Original.pdf

its basically just a self powered 99.99% hepa that blows about 90fpm or so I think.

EDIT: okay, I looked in a little more detail at the pdf you supplied, and it looks kind of promising for you.

Considering I'm not entirely sure its producing laminar flow, the only way to know is for you to check yourself.

There's a lot of people who know more about flow hoods than I do who can tell you how to do this, namely RR, since he's assisted countless members with flowhood construction and all that.

Well, okay, I've googled around and you're good to go. That thing DOES output laminar flow, and from what I've read its used in clean rooms and hospitals where sterility is key.

Give it a testing, if it's not suitable for the job, your first set of plates will more than likely show it.

EDIT: How the HELL did you come across something like this, anyways?

hehe, the interwebs are full of cheap thingies if your lucky and persistant. Got it for about $200 shipped to me in new condition! Its been hanging from the ceiling for a few months but i dont ever run it really but for 15 mins at a time every week or so. Im thinking of ripping it down and using it for a flowhood now...sice i tore my old flowhood up by trying to move it in a fussy mood with my girlfriend and i broke it :frown:

It's not going to flow as much as a flowhood normally should, but might still work OK if you do your work right up agaist it. It's going to flow at an airspeed of about 80-90 feet per minute, while 100 to 120 feet per minute is recommended. Note it's output is 360 cubic feet per minute spread over 4 square feet.

For flowhood use, I'd let it run in a small room at least an hour before beginning work in order to scrub the ambient air clean.

im testin' it out here in a second. I dont really have a small room to do it in conveniently and the bathroom wouldnt work so im hoping it works in the kitchenette area...

doing up about 400ml of agar from sporeworks to pour a few plates and see what happens. Its cooking now! WEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEee!!!(squirrel noise)

Notice my fancy Plexiglases on top and bottom to give a small area to clean with extra fancy anti-germicidal... Hope it works!

I'd put up some dividers around your work area to stop drafts. A weak flowhood like that can easily have the sterile flow overcome by drafts in the room. The reason for the small room is so the flowhood can scrub the air clean in the hour or two you let it run prior to starting work.

If the face of it is ceramic, you can spray it with lysol before turning on to kill contaminants that have come to rest on the surface of the filter itself.

alright i did it! I shot 5 cc of peroxide into each flask of agar which had about 200ml inside or so. THen swirled and poured some plates.

In good roger rabit fashion (I didnt want to make you too upset by not using in an enclosed space) I also did a few "hot agar sandwhich" plates in which i poured the hot agar in the plate on a little chunk of agar i cut from a dish that had condensated all over itself in the fridge and is surely contammed from the water being on it even though it apears fine (been refreidgerated for a while). I made a few lcs from similar agar plates that had condensated and they contammed.... hopefully the good will grow through the top and the baddies will stay submerged.

I see a used Baker edgeGARD IV-22 on ebay for $62.99 located in Colorado. I'd jump on that if I lived close by or could afford 300+ shipping on top. I'm sure it would need a new filter too though. 24x24x5-7/8 99.99 hepa with a .7" WG @ 500cfm with downstream gasket is the replacement stats for the filter.
