Did I ruin my cacti?

Here's a pic:

Those white spots have been concerning me, and I don't know what they are. Some say scabs, some say mealy bugs and I'm torn. Because while they look and kind of act like scabs, I saw an ugly bug curled on top of this one before. So I started scraping them off, and most of the things that came off kind of tore into the skin as you can see.
Did I harm my cacti? If I did, I'll buck up, chop 'em, and dry them then hope for the best on the next batch.
BTW these came from NO SOUIRCES!!! and had the spots when they first arrived. I was pretty disappointed with my purchase from them. And of course they have no email address.
If you have any problems with that picture, let me know. My camera kind of sucks, so it takes a lot of effort to get a good picture.

Just for a little bit. Until they get some big roots, you know.

Yea i have heard cacti root better horizontally from the lady at my local nursery.
She had a San Pedro segment that she had left on the weed mat for a few weeks and it sent out some big ass roots.
Your cacti is fine, i had similar little lumps on my cacti, i thought they may be Scale (a real gay bug thing). I scraped them off and my cacti have a few scars now but they are fine!

You really gotta beat the hell out of san pedro to kill them, it looks like it will do quite well, the more you beat them the better they behave LOL.

Here's what I did with some etoliated tips last year.

All in all, I'd say this method is great for rooting quick, but it seemed to produce less growth than those rooted upright over a single season. Perhaps the effort went more into the roots.

Is that some sort of trippy basil or is it just basil in the pics?
How long is the longest you have grown a cacti horizontally?

Regular basil. I've only grown them for a single season that way, whcih is why i can't answer whether the growth would be better over the long run. Short-term it wasn't. I also asked about this befre i tried it and others said it was no more effective. I had to uproot them to bring them indoors for the winter. The root systems were very large for the amount of time I had them rooting. It seems that the portion of the cactus that was underground is prone to rotting. It turns yellow from lack of sun, and I had one cactus rot very soon after pulling it up.

When you plant them horizontally they just send out pups which grow vertical.
