Just a quick question popped into my mind as the longer one of the plants is getting TOO TALL! How harmful is it to cut the mainstem from the thicker parts of the stem, lets say the stem in the place I was thinking about cutting is around 2 centimeters thick?

fuck yeah!
they look GREAT 
i'm guessing there shouldn't be any problames if you cut it, it'll simply start growing some side shoots...
my salvia clones are all dead now 
the heat was too much for them and i have no alternative for them 
i watched them slowly slowly giving out, painfully sitting there doing nothing, i had some hope for them surviving but avidently they didn't...
kudoes for gorwing such lovely ladies!!!

they will just put out a load of side shoots, it wont do any harm, your plants look very vigorous and i bet they regenerate fast...
imagine those beauties with 4-6 stems that are 2.5m tall... i hope u have plenty of space for them hohoho

Space is propably the only thing I don't have and the situation grows even worse when I have to move to a smaller apartment  Thats why I'm gonna try to grow a smaller and bushier Salvia plant. I'm planning on growing alot of other plants aswell but the lack of space is quite a problem  Maybe some lophs as they don't take up too much space

Heh, well you don't seem to have the problem with space, at least accoring to your picture galleries Thats hell of a collection you got there!
The most I would have for lophs is maybe 2ft x 4ft (and propably lose it after moving). That should accomodate some 50 at least, now just gotta get some seeds or seedlings! 
I've always dreamed of a large collection of plants of different kinds but it takes ALOT of space, maybe I should move out to countryside (or to a different country)! :O

Heya!
Just thought to add a recent (but shitty ) photo of my Sally plant number one. Only number one as number two underwent a major operation and is now about 10 centimeter tall stub which wouldn't interest anyone (propably this won't either but whatever :P )
As you can see it has grown hell of a lot being at least 2,5 meters tall and almost as wide as that As plants tend to grow toward light this one has become really other sided with main stem dropping leaves now and then as it ain't getting enough light (?) It really starts to be troubling big as it restricts movement in and out from the room :P
Wait a minute.. I had a question aswell!
How to get my sally plant to flower? What kind of light cycle it needs? Anything else of noting?

Wow! nice salvia tree you have. Is that a metal halide bulb in your setup? If so, a High Pressure Sodium setup could be used to induce flowering, or you could goto the store and see if they have any kind of chemicals for it?
*you could cut that salvia plant to the right down a little and make cuttings so all it's leaves could be under the light

Heya, and thanks for the input!
Yea, thats 400W MH. I got a 400W HPS bulb, but I really can't use it in the same room where I live in most of the time as the orange color makes my head hurt, been there, done that! My HBWR once started to flower under MH so I don't think it would really induce the flowering, maybe strenghten it [flowering] tho! I will check out the link for info!
You are right about cutting it but I really don't have any space for extra cuttings and I think its pretty gorgeous as it is (it's still growing damn fast despite the quite small pot). I also have some chilis straight under the light.
I thought that maybe moving the lamp up a bit could give Sally more light but I'm not sure how that would decrease the light on floor level as I've heard chilis need quite a bit of light.. I really need to do some calculations or see charts for that, when I can be arsed

there actually is a difference between the MH and HPS bulbs, and it's what you already mentioned yourself. The HPS are more of an orange light, and it more mimics the light from a fall sun (MH bulbs are more in the blue spectrum, which is like a summer sun), which helps to induce flowering in plants (not all maybe?) correct me if im wrong! Either way, awesome plants and I hope your hbwr flowers.

Hey hey,
I inconveniently thought to reply to my own thread to ask a question instead of making a new Salvia thread of my own.
I recently moved and really don't have as much space as I used to for keeping plants (actually mostly because my plant collection has increased in number). So I thought to recycle the pots my Salvias sit in into growing pot and move them back to smaller pots (pots seen in my original post). The question is how well does Salvia take root pruning and confining the rest of rootmass to smaller space?
I don't mind if they slow the growth down as they grow damn fast again (after pruning them leafless a long time ago), I just don't want them to die on me as I love them..

it will be fine, i ran in to the same problem as you and i trimmed my salvias roots down to fit in to a smaller pot
(it is better than getting rid of some plants)
now the salvia grows just fine and i keep them trimmed to the space i have
no problem what so ever

I did the transfer and at least the death hasn't been instantaneous! I had to remove pretty much of the fine looking rootsystem but the situation seems stable. Now just gotta wait to see them start growing again

hey gilrand nice job .
you probably know by now , you can trim sally back pretty far, and still be ok. that said, i'd put those plants in 1/2 gal. or 1 gal pots now. bigger roots mean bigger growth. if you don't have room indoors , put em outside come spring. nice shady spot. less light =fat leaves. more light = small leaves, fast growth.
