One would think the fertilizer would rinse out. Plus its not like your cakes touch it.

Perlite with miracle grow has been known to promote algae formation, so you end up with green perlite in your FC

no no no no... lol.. if you cannot find straight perlite, then use pumice... just soak it in the shower with hot water, drain well, and lay it out in the FC... it works just as good as perlite, in my opinion... and in some areas, its easier to find...
you just want something to make humidity... you dont want anything else in there, because you will get contams... straight perlite or pumice (my preference) will suit you fine...
also, add a few glugs of hydrogen peroxide to the stuff.. it will help

Using paper towels in the bottom of terrariums for humidity is a long-proven technique. In fact, for many years I've kept them stuffed into any spot in my mini-greenhouse that tends to collect drips of water. Change them out once a week or so, and keep them fairly well squeezed of excess moisture so that what's in the paper towel can evaporate back out. You can even press damp paper towels against the back and/or sides of the FC to give more surface area. Clean cloth towels can also be used, and simply tossed into the washing machine once a week. RR
