Looking for some music recommendations
    #7966606 - 02/01/08 08:47 PM (16 years, 7 hours ago)

I'm looking for some chill music that is mostly just instrumental and kinda improvisational.
A perfect example of what I'm looking for is like the grateful dead's dark star. I have not listened to a lot of the grateful dead, but what I have listened to, I liked mostly instrumental stuff a lot more than the stuff with lyrics. Have I just been listening to the wrong cd's, or do any of you know of any bands I should check out?

Lotus sounds amazing (I'll have to get a bunch of their cd's), and telepath was cool too. Wasn't able to find much of danny howells on itunes, but I'll keep an eye out, from what I heard he sounded cool.

All of what has been recommended so far is awesome, I like the electronicish stuff also, but id like to add more natural/rock kinda stuff ( dont know if thats a good way to explain it, more grateful dead instrumental like stuff )

Thanks for the great sounding stuff so far, keep up the good recommendations guys

Not chill at all, but the new mars volta album is fucking sick.

Much better than Amputechture imo, although Tetragrammaton is an awesome song.

Some people just don't like the singer's voice, which I can somewhat understand.

I just love their sound in conjunction with their image, it's very trippy in a way that many other bands aren't.

It seems to acknowledge and embrace the freaky scary twisted side of psychedelics and other drugs, not just the "woah" trippy parts.

And yes, I do view most of the music I listen to within the context of drugs :P

every album that the dead ever made is a must have, but like i said if your really looking for some songs with allot of jamming in them then get warf rat and terrip station, warf rat is like 14 mins long and terripin is around 16

peace out Dm

Also  Pnuma Trio  for your instrumental tastes   (should be able to find plenty of them on archive.)

For Dead albums...

Workingman's Dead, Dead Set, American Beauty... all solid starting points.

I'd recommend:

Joshua Redman (stuff with his elastic band, look for the albums "Elastic" or "Momentum") There's also an album with the same three artists under the name Yaya3. Not that Redman's other stuff isn't good, but this shit is unique and fucking awesome.

Roy Hargrove. Again with a specific recommendation, look for RH Factor stuff. Roy Hargrove also does straight ahead jazz shit that's really really good, but RH Factor shit is funky and :awesome:

John Coltrane and Miles Davis obviously. Check out Coltrane's A Love Supreme, fucking fantastic album.
Charlie Parker
McCoy Tyner - Check out Super Trios
Wynton Marsalis
Branford Marsalis
Chris Potter
Dave Holland Big Band
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers
Herbie Hancock
Jaco Pastorius
Kenny Garret
GRP All-Stars
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra - Their arrangement (written by Wynton Marsalis) of A Love Supreme is really good.
Pat Metheny Group's album The Way Up is fucking phenomenal.
Thelonious Monk

Some of my favorite artists, a small but good list to start with I think.

For you I would definitely say look for Redman's Elastic and Momentum albums, I think you'll like them.
