Fuzz on just the bottom of caps
    #7966569 - 02/01/08 08:42 PM (16 years, 7 hours ago)

First off, I would like to thank everyone in this community for all of the time they put into sharing info with noobies like me. I wouldn't have gotten this far without you people.

Anyway, I had a great first flush of B+ with cased rye and some friends and I really enjoyed the fruits of our labor. No one felt sick or anything. But I have noticed something strange with the second flush. Some of the mushrooms have what appears to be white fuzz on just the bottoms of their caps. The mushrooms look healthy otherwise. Here are links to couple hi-res pics of the bottoms of some caps. The ones on the left are the mushrooms I'm concerned about and the ones on the right are what I consider normal.

Any advice would be appreciated. If it is a contam, it'd also be great to know which contam it is, how to prevent it, and if there is anyway I can prepare them to make them safe.

That is Hypomyces....

This is a pretty rare contaminant of indoor cultivation. I have only seen one other case of it on here.

Hypomyces is a mushroom that parasitized the fruiting bodies of other mushrooms.
It eventually rots the host fruiting body.

Separate the stem, and throw away the caps that are all white like that. If you have some with a little bit of Hypomyces, you can cut off the infected area. The stem will be fine for drying.

I'm not sure that this species of Hypomyces (whatever species that is) is dangerous to eat, but because it rots the mushrooms, you should discard them.
