Same for me with being too young to really comprehend it. I do remember that we had some high school kids come in to teach the course to our class. (I'm not even really sure it was DARE... it involved a book with some little green monster at school and a little girl trying to give him drugs)
As I got older, I realized those kids probably were forced to do it after being caught with drugs or something haha.
I was afraid of LSD for a long time because a friend of mine said you could die from it the first time you take it. Then I discovered Erowid.

Hey I dont think i was ever educated about drugs until i was in jr. high school. I think the dare program started when i was in 8th grade or something. But I agree weed is no big deal, alcohol is much worse..just from personal experience. Alcohol has made me late for work many times, made me spend more $$$ then i intended to...etc. But yes the laws are stupid all right, just for posessing something natural you can go to jail, and pay fines.

I don't think I ever had DARE in school. We had drug education in 9th grade though and I remember reading about it made me want to try LSD and marijuana, but skip all the rest. Mushrooms were mysteriously missing from the text. I think I had a pretty good bullshit detector even back then.

I don't think I did either, like i said in the other post..it was 1985 when i was in 9th grade, i just had assemblys where ex-cokeheads, ex-herion addicts told thier true life story about thier downward spiral on hard drugs. I never heard about a bad story about someone that just smoked pot only.

around here there are no such programs. most people don't know anything about drugs and don't care. every time i hear something about them (pot makes you psychotic etc) i also hear The Dude mumbling "hey... that's just like, your opinion, man" and i chill out.

I would be more inclined on a seminar warning younger teens about the negative side effects of long term and excessively damaging substances; like tobacco, nicotine, alcohol, and yes...even THC. Not something to scare naive children, but a program to highlight the real problems with persistent use and abuse of any of these substances.
MADD I currently think does a program similar to this but not of any serious effectiveness, its more about ex-alcoholic teens and ex-meth users who have gone over the deep end. I'm referring more to your average Joe who will casually combine those 4 substances in different ratios and aspects...but on a regular bases.
I dunno...I just figure a better tactic to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle might be to show someone taking some initiative towards changing their habits and show how good it can make a person feel to take that kind of control over their life. Rather than using the familiar scare tactics, or the "well we don't do drugs so were much better than them" attitude.

slavic people aren't particularly blond and blue-eyed.
nevertheless there are no drug education programs over here. there's some but they are a joke for most kids and kids who believe acid makes your brain explode shouldn't be messing around with such substances anyway.

I'm not too familiar with all the countries in Europe..i was way off. But yes, I can't believe they lie to kids about acid/shrooms, just to keep them from using drugs. I think the U.S. laws are just stupid when it comes to drugs..education and the law.

I guess it just introduced me to the idea of drugs. Before the program came to my school in elementary school I had little idea of what drugs were. Dare didn't necessarily turn me off to the drugs, just informed me of them.

I never even thought about drugs until one night in Junior High I was at my church youth group and there was a guy there talking about how horrible LSD was. He went on and on and mentioned something about looking up at his speckled ceiling, and it began twisting into a vortex and turned into a giant mouth and it came down and engulfed him.
Ever since then, I've been facinated by drugs. Church ruined my life

I was introduced to DARE at the age of five. I was living in Utah and the DARE program there started off early and went on ALL YEAR. Mormons are NUTS about their kids not taking drugs. NUTS. We even had some anti-drug pep rally type events, where the teachers would get us all amped up and excited about not doing drugs. It was total brainwashing.
Even then, i remember thinking to myself, "I'm probably going to end up doing drugs." I got really scared whenever I would think this, because I knew it was the truth and because my little six year old mind was totally petrified that I would go off the deep end and never be the same person again. Even when I started doing drugs, especially hallucinogenic drugs, I was still totally paranoid and neurotic about what was happening to me. It took me a few acid trips to overcome the brainwashing.
DARE is a very effective program if begun early and vigorously. It doesn't keep kids from doing drugs, it introduces them to the idea. If they're appropriately brainwashed the adult will be neurotic and doubtful of their own decisions. Luckily LSD is an effective treatment for DARE-induced disorders.

I had DARE in 6th grade. I swore off drugs from then on. Later that year I 'just said no' to a kid who offered me a cigarette...i was so proud of myself when i got home
The next year I found out that a friend of mine had smoked weed a few times. I got super interested and ended up trying it...and liking it...then proceeded to do all those other drugs they said were bad...shrooms, lsd, ecstacy, cigs, and booze within the next year
