Interesting, but with coir as cheap as it is, why experiment?
What am I saying, I love experimenting!
These are not organic though, which I insist on for any myco material.

Sounds like a plan. If it's packed really tight, you might want to break it up and mix with a bit of vermiculite to fluff it up. RR

The wax and "natural binders" would make me nervous but without experimentation we never learn new things.

I see no problem with it at all. However, there's only one way to find out. Let us know how it goes. RR

So i finally got the Java Log.. It says one 5lb log equals 365 cups of spent coffee grounds. Any tips on how i should go about using this? i can cut through it with some effort.and the smaller pieces break up fairly easy. should i try boiling it?

100% coffee grounds are great but I strongly suggest mixing with coir and or coir/verm...
Coffee grounds do not retain moisture very well and tend to go dry after 1 or 2 flushes. Dunking doesn't seem to help either.

This is a really cool concept, and I'm curious to see how it goes since I work for a certain Moby Dick referenced giant coffee corporation and have almost unlimited access to spent coffee grounds!!!

Ok.. The myc is growing very slowly.. I think i used too much log. i did the math and it averages out to 10 cups of spent grounds per jar ..lol every inch of log equals about 25 cups of spent coffee grounds.
I did one jar with a much lighter mix of coffee/rye flour and verm and that one is doing very well. i'm going to try this again with a much lighter mix.

I had a very nice first flush off 100% coffee grounds but the 2nd was very poor opposed to the 2nd, 3rd flush from the coir/coffee grounds mix, coffee grounds are hard to retain moisture and even harder to restore moisture to onced colonized by mycelium, I also mentiond that coffee grounds in excess can throw off the P.H of the bulk and lead to very slow colonization.

If I have some sitting out I usually mix it in with any grains. No real reason it's just a random habit.

I really hope a tek comes out of this, as it sounds promising. I actually have a java-log in my pants..Pantry. I mean, pantry.
A couple questions: How coarse were the coffee grounds after you broke them up? Did you add verm? What has your colonizing time been like vs any experience with grain?
Please post more pics and the final results. With the condensed nutrients like that, potency and yield might be great. Keep up the good work!

I'm getting more impressed with the java log.. the other cake is still producing, and the mushrooms look more normal, nice and solid in the middle, compared to spongy and weird looking, like the first flush. It was never dunked but continues to grow mushrooms, one after another. the coffee substrate attached to the base of the mushroom smells like rich soil. I imagine the plants will like it, when the mushies are done their job. I'm going to spawn the java jars to pro mix, dried Cannabis roots, alder shavings, vermiculite , lime and a dash of mustard seed.

On a serious note, you birthed them as solid cakes? Are they real solid? I'm interested how the java-jars cased solely would produce. I might just have to do a grain2java transfer.

i am serious. If just doing cakes i wouldnt add more than a tablespoon of boiled java log per half pint. yes they are solid enough to do cakes.
