Powderizing Crushed Oyster Shell
    #7965239 - 02/01/08 02:52 PM (16 years, 9 hours ago)

First of all, I'd like to say feed stores are where its at. 5.60 for a bale of wheat straw, 60 cents per pound of crushed oyster shells. I wanted to ask though, if anyone had any good ideas on crushing the oyster shells into smaller bits that could then be used in a casing layer??
Best I could think of would maybe be crush them with a hammer on some plastic, but I know that would tear throught the plastic...

Fill a quart jar 1/3 full of crushed oyster shell screw on the plastic base and blade assembly for a blender onto the jar (every blender base I've seen screws onto a standard masson jar) then stick it onto the blender and start grinding. Tiping the blender over 45 degrees seems to work pretty good...

If you have an expensive blender I wouldn't recommend it. You can get a new blender for like $20 or very likely for a couple bucks form a thrift shop.

If you fill the jar too much it does seem to slow down the blades, that's why I say only fill the jar 1/3 full and tip it on it's side. Over time it'll probably will dull the blades.

I've a lot of this with a $20 blender I bought from walmart. It's still running fine. I would just run it 30-45 second bursts then shake the mixture let it sit for a second and go again.
