stand up bass...

I've inherited an old stand up bass from my dad. I don't know where i'm going to keep the thing, let alone the first thing about playing it.
First, I have to get it from coast to coast, basically.. and have it repaired once I get it, because I know that the bridge is broken. I'm sure that neither of those things will be cheap. I am pretty sure my dad still has new strings for it, though.
i'm really excited to have it around, though... I absolutely love how wooden stand-ups sound. So warm.
Anyone have any experience playing a bass like this? Just how hard is it? I have a few years worth of dicking around on the electric bass, from high-school... but, I was never any good, really. The only other real instrument i ever played was the sax.. but, i stopped that in like 8th grade.
Regardless.. I don't care if I can never play it well.. I just want to be able to listen to it. Getting good at it would be pretty awesome, though.

if you can play a bass, you can play an upright
a buddy who plays in a band with some other friends and his son had never played a bass guitar before, just guitar. one was pretty much given to him and he learned in a year or so...he's really good on the thing

Don't know what yout playing style is Yos, but with me, I found it slighty harder to slap, pop, double thumb pluck the strings. Being that I'm more of a percussion style bassist, an up-right isn't really meant for that type of style.
But take a stab at it. Those things are expernsive and will widen your fortay of versatility.
