Two ?'s on my first grow.

This is a pic (I know, picture is blurry and it sucks, but it gets the point across) of one of my jars. In the first one, you can see the water line. The second is a shot of the bottom of the jar. My questions are: 1) Is that water potentially lethal to the grow. 2) Would that cake do better if I went ahead and and birthed it. I know how to use the Search feature, but haven't found any info that everyone has agreed on so far. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. You can pop the lid real quick and drain it out, be fast and clean in a glovebox preferably.

What about my dry verm layer on top of the cake?

i dumped out some rice i thought might be bad on top once on my first grow and it didnt hurt a thing.....just dump the water out... i would remove the band then pop the lid on one side only let it drain....dont need glove box....make sure you clean the air in a closet first and was your hands with 90% first.....works for me every time....im not even that clean...i dont spray the air...but i dont have an up draft or anything either...

Would it hurt anything if I just turned the jar upside down?

thats what i was thinking.. turn over the jars and let the water drain from the holes in the top. you should prob ally set it about surface somehow and let the water drain into a bowl or something of course. also i heard somewhere the bottoms always take longer to colonize and you flip them over to have them speed up, 2 birds 1 stone, good luck.

Okay, here's the deal. That dry vermiculite is there for a reason, and that's to act as filter to keep any contams that may or may not have gotten into the jar from settling on the substrate and germinating.
If you get it wet, anything that might be on it will attempt to grow, and it will wick right through the moist vermiculite and try and chow down on your cake, especially since you have standing water and an uncolonized portion.
You're better off just birthing it now, and cutting off the uncolonized section. Waiting around too much longer isn't going to do you any good. Rescue that poor cake before the mean green eats it up.
New guys, I understand you've learned something new and you're excited to help out, but please try and stay away from "I think" kind of answers. Just because it sounds like it would work doesn't always mean it will. Read more on how things are done before you go feeding other people misinformation, because even if you're just trying to help, inaccurate info can wreck a grow. There's all kinds of "help, I fucked something up" posts for you to learn from, and a lot of them have good, definitive answers by the pros around here who've been growing for 30+ years.
Aside from Day Tripper, who I've seen plenty of good accurate posts from already, I know you guys are all probably little fledglings still learning to get things going right. Just keep reading, and try not to pass on the "I think" answers. Now get learning!

Thanks Skeeblix. After I cut the bottom portion off, should it still be dunked and rolled?

"I think so"......
Just playing! Absolutely. Make sure you have everything prepared prior to the actual cutting. Do the cutting and proceed to the dunking part as quickly as possible.

Yeah, just got finished. Not feeling so hot about it..lol. The myc growth looked really thick all the way around the cake, but when I cut a small section of the bottom off, I could see that the inside wasnt very colonized. Also, the myc had grown up through the verm layer and was sticking to the top of the lid. Is this normal? Is this cake doomed? Eh, first shot at it, I have lotsa learnin left.

That's never ever happened to me. The one time that I had mycelium type growth on the top verm layer and sticking to the lid, it was contamination. I'M NOT SAYING THAT'S WHAT GOING ON WITH YOURS! Just dunk for 24 hours in the fridge and take it from there. It's not over till it's over.

did you birth it?? I would have just tipped it sideways. I would not want the cake to free itself from the jar with all that water in it.
