Red is AWESOME.
One of my best friends -In(di)go- is a diehard tool fan, and no matter how much he tells me to listen to it I still don't see their greatness... Maybe I should just try again

I like Tool, but I don't think not accepting input from anyone else makes them good or makes me respect them any more.
Also, what does "they push the art" mean?

I have already had a heated debate about it on here before, but if you are a tool fan, and you cant name one king crimson song... kill yourself. KC is their predecessor, and probably their number one influence. granted they work together and intermingle now, but Tools sound has always, IMO, been a more consumable version of King Crimson. Maynard of course makes the biggest difference since Adrian Belew is a rather shitty singer, but KC were the initial inventors of industrial prog that weaved 5/4s on top of 4/4s and such.
Just listen to Red or Thrak by KC and you will retroactively feel a little loss of awe for tool's genius.
93 Disagree completely. Even Robert Fripp has said that the only thing tool has done that sounds remotely like anything kc has done is 3 notes(read 3 notes) at a certain part of one of their songs, and kc never even released that music. Influence does not always manifest in similar sounding music, it can have other outlets as is evidently the case here. Matter of fact, if there are any novel similarities between the two, it would be in kc's TCOL with a slight TOOL influence. Listening to any of kc's music does not diminish the respect and sense of originality I have for either of those bands, I am able to appreciate them fully in their own right. 93 93/93

Maybe you should rename this thread "Ten reasons why YOU like Tool so much. As a Tool fan who doesn't want to be lumped in with gushing fanbois, I'm gonna have to pick apart your post here. Don't speak for all of us please.
1) Their collaboration with each other is, for lack of a better word, perfect. (I know this statement is opinion-based, but I just had to point it out.)
When you refer to something as perfect, your credibility goes out the window. No band is perfect.
2) Their growth as a band over the last 15 years. Not to mention that they're still together when most bands from that era aren't.
Aenima was a masterpiece, the two recent albums are weak in comparison. I like that they have experimented, I don't always like the results. Art is subjective, but not entirely. They don't have the magic they had twelve years ago.
3) They're NOT sell-out faggots like most bands ARE. They NEVER listen to anyone's input when making their music. They make producers look like bitches.
What do you know about the creative process of most bands? For that matter, what do you know about how Tool does their work? You're romanticizing here.
4) They push the ART!!
Everybody with non-formulaic music does.
5) From a drummer and lyricist P.O.V., Danny Carey is the shit at drums and Maynard really IS a genius. (How he hears/writes those lyrics to those instrumentals is beyond me.)
Lyrically, Maynard can't hold a candle to history's great songwriters. Not even close. Genius? Come on. The lyrics have never been the most outstanding aspect of Tool's music. They're adequate; hardly brilliant.
Danny Carey is utterly incredible, I can't argue that.
6) Their live performances are the shit. (They pull off some hard shit live.)
I've seen a lot of shows, including Tool twice, and they're pretty good, but the ones I saw just don't stand out among some of the other concerts I've been to. Worth every penny, but I've seen better shows. Depends on which show I suppose.
7) Their first real album(Undertow) was awesome front to back and once they got Justin Chancellor, their new shit took off to a whole new level.
It changed their sound, no doubt; I like both.
8) You can't just hear to TOOL, you have to listen to them! Feel the music and absorb it's attitude. (Try smokin a bowl, and drive around at night and blast your stereo to Eulogy or the Grudge. Preferably alone.)
If Tool is the only band you have this type of affinity for, then I feel sorry for you.
9) Easily some of the best album(s) artwork, music videos, and live enhancements.
I like their imagery too. Their videos ARE outstanding, albeit peripheral to the music itself.
10) They're pretty much untouchable. They don't do what you want; they do what they want.
Again, not unique to Tool.
Man, you're really overstating this band. There is a reason you encounter so much animosity towards Tool fans: over-the-top gushing fanship like this. They're a good band -- one good band out of thousands. If you want to exalt these guys as Gods, go ahead, but don't speak for me or any other Tool fans.

Come on, you know you don't need to like or even be aware of a band's influences to like that band. Levels of musical exposure vary from person to person; no reason to hold that against someone. When you listen to new record, you know if you like it or not. Are you supposed to stop and go listen to their influences before you call yourself a fan?

Yeah, it does. I went to 5 shows on this last tour, including the very first show and last show in vegas. I also saw then in 2002. The recent shows have been a let down for me, visually, the 2002 tour was unreal with the alex grey screens that came down during reflection. It was probably one of the top five experiences of my life and it is the concert by which all others are compared to - 5 yrs later. But yeah, your right it does matter which one. I love their live shows and i've listened to hundreds of shows. Their shows have evolved a lot over the years. The best ones are from 1996-1998 imo, for the audio, and 2001-2002 for the visuals.

If you're only listening to their recent stuff, that may be why. If you don't like Undertow or Aenima, it's safe to say you don't like them.

I consider myself a tool "fan" I have only seen em once (july 07) I enjoyed myself and like most all their music.
I have to say I am not so sure Maynard is such a brilliant lyricist, I have to say sometimes he writes some good lyrics but sometimes I find his lyrics less than poetic and borderline preachy/pretentious. However, I try not to over think that stuff. Bottom line, I enjoy them
Plus I have tool to thank for having the biggest poster available of Alex Greys Net of Being... I love having a 40x60" print of the piece.

At least some people live up to the word "Fanatic".
I listen to A LOT of different kinds of music and nothing comes close to the precision and intensity of f00l, imo.
At the f00l shows I completely loose my mind and I see 1 in 100 people contorting and foaming at the mouth like me.
I guess some people are just born with the f00l gene.
Thanks for that link Furrowed.

I think the peak of their "magic" was Lateralus and is their masterpiece.
And I've always said, there's nothing worse than a rabid Tool fan. Most of them literally believe they are gods.

aw hells yeah.
and i want to put in my two cents about tool
i really liked them back in the aenima days..
lateralus was awesome.. but to me it was more noise than content like aenima, but it was a good album as a whole as it flowed together so that was ok.
10,000 days, however, was all noise to me and not much content at all.. i think there were maybe two or three really well defined songs on there from what i heard and i was very disappointed.
i've heard they always procrastinate a lot and rush at the end to get it done.. well i waited five years for 10,000 days and was very let down.
i dont really consider myself a tool fan anymore because it's hard to call that cd 'good' because there's really not a lot of content on it as opposed to previous offerings.
i think they just kinda blew off that cd and tried to put some stoner rock on there to get people to buy it...
not for me anymore, but you can never take aenima, lateralus, opiate, undertow, and EVEN SALIVAL from my past, but the tool of today is not the same as the tool of yesteryear.

Fair enough... I hear this a lot. Here's my question: those of you who think Lateralus is their best work, when did you start listening to Tool?

I thought LaTeRaLus was their best work, I didn't really like them until Aenima.
I was disappointed by 10K Days at first, but after the 23rd listen or so, I really started to like it.
Those who heard the extensions at their Winter '07 US shows should know they haven't peaked yet...
