It might be close to a half pint but why would you want to waste the space by making half pint cakes in a pint jar? I would just make pint cakes... more substrate = more fruits...

I'm hearing alot about colonization times increasing and the chance of infection being higher due to that. I'll be using the cakes in the casing tek but I dont want my colo time being up to 2-3 months

If your sterile procedure is good you should not have anything to worry about. You might want to look into making a LC if you want to speed up colonization times. You might also want to look into grains if you are going to spawn to bulk. Last night I spawned some quart jars of WBS that only took 6 days to colonize after inoculation with my PE LC...

So you're thinking, it's better to have less substrate with a higher chance of success.
The truth is, follow the instructions and don't cut corners with your sterilization... you'll be fine with either size.
Your theory would work, it's true. I'd personally just use the whole jar and be extra extra clean. Or maybe a couple jars used to their potential so that i could at least have confidence to do them all that way next time.
Cheers!

With the PF Tek its best to use 1/2 pints.
Pints can take incredibly long to colinise and are more likely to stall.
You would be better of doing twice as many 1/2 pints. The dry verm layer at the top is there to act as a filter, so would serve no purpose on the bottom.
If you only half pint jars, and are having trouble getting pints to colinising fully, you can use drinking glasses with tinfoil lids.

True, the bottom layer would serve no purpose other than to reduce the volume of the 1 pint jar. But, I'm looking to have 1/2 pint success in a 1 pint world. yes, im cheap (broke) and don't want to invest in 1/2's if I can manage to use pints.

dry verm on the bottom shouldnt be a problem. I just did the same (used it as filler on 1 pint jars), and i've birthed 3 out of 6 jars by the 20th day.

You new folks seriously need to follow the teks rather than inventing your own on your first grow. Those who have done this a few thousand times have written up procedures that work, not experimental 'maybe' stuff.
Use 1/2 pints for pf tek. Verm absorbs moisture. Exactly where do you think the moisture in your mix is going to go with 2 1/2" of verm on the bottom? RR

yeah RR is right, someone I know tried to use verm in the bottom as filler in some sort of jar and the moisture content was way off he did a 2cc multispore and I took the liberty of putting 10cc of liquid mycelium into the jar
pint cakes are fine, you may want to pressure cook over steaming because they seem to be harder to sterilize even when steamed for 2 hours (my personal observation) outcome of 2hour steamed 1/2 pint jars is around 95% success? success with 1pint jars steamed for 2 hours is about 60% success? my personal results seem consistant.
