Question: Can a Male marijuana plant be turned into a female?
I got f#@king blasted at my old grow forum for just bringing up the possibility of being able to change a male Cannabis Sativa into a female sativa. I'm not saying it can or can't be done. If there is a possibility that it can be done I think that's something that should be looked into. Otherwise I'd like to put the myth to rest right here and now.
First, one can turn a male into a hermaphrodite by doing that funky thing with the light cycle right? It's been so long since I grew I can't remember. I only grew 1 plant all the way to the flowering stage and it ended up being a hermy without any light cycle tampering. I think it's something like changing the light cycle to 1 - 23 or 1 - 11 - 1 - 11. Idk.
So the theory is that you turn your male into a hermy and then just cut off all the male buds and shazam. You got your female.
The obviouse problem with this is that even if you can do this the male buds will polinate the female buds before you can cut them off and then the female buds will produce little to no THC. I suppose one way you can do it would be to cut off the male buds before you turn the plant hermy. You'd have to constantly watch for male buds though.
Question: Would a hermy that polinates itself still produce some THC? My hermy didn't produce any noticiceable THC, but that may be just because I harvested too early
Anyway, it just seems to me like this is something that deserves more discussion and research. I wish I didn't have to ask it on a MUSHROOM forum, but overgrow.com got shut down. Soooo sad

No you cannot change a male into a full fledged female and hermys suck. You can though make a female plant pollinate itself and if you can do that then you will get feminized seeds that only turn out female male. I did once get a hermy and take clones of the female parts and grew them and I got some of the strongest bud I ever smoked. Happy growing.

This post was pretty helpful, but it still kind of leaves things open-ended.
Let me be more specific. Lets say someone is growing just a few plants. They are not worried about profit or a smokable harvest. They just want to experiment for the sake of experimentations. All they want to find out is: How difficult is it to make a male plant go hermy? AND Would the resulting hermy produce enough THC to be worth smoking.
I'm not expecting knock you on your ass quality shit here. Just something that is I can smoke. Basically, if it produces more THC than a male would and I'm only growing the one has an experiment, is it going to be worth it to try to give the plant a sex change? Assume that the grower is a light-weight and only wants to get himself high a few times.

we dont know how to produce female from males, but we can do vice versa since we know so hormones as gibberalic acid that can produce male flower in females, but i guees could be dome we dont have that technology do , yet, many tipes of hermafroditism exist some are stress related, some photoperiodod, some for hormones some are genetically, the introduction to the market to 100% females seeds was done thoug induce male flowers in females, and the spring cross with the same paret , to produce 100 females, if not you get 50 and 50

Can't be done.
And Hermies aren't anything you want to try either.

All respect man, but do you understand the concept of experimentation? We've established that getting rid of the males is more economical and effecient for the for-profit grower. I figured as much before I started this thread. My question is a hypothetical one, for the purpose of expanding our knowledge of the process and for the exploration of thought.
Cactu: Thanks for the help. The only question I have left is what are the odds of being able to induce female flowers in a male plant by applying different types of stress to it?
