Have any Americans lived outside of the US and liked it better in the country they were staying in? If so, what country was it and what did you like about it?

Cool! I highly recommend Rio de Janeiro, I've been there 3 times and I'm going to be going again in 2 weeks! Beautiful place with beautiful women. A bit on the dangerous side so watch out!

I'm applying to grad schools in Europe, I've lived in Geneva for a year and think it would be great to live and study in Europe once again. Netherlands, Sweden, Spain and Austria are all potential places I could end up.

Hey...something I know a little about. I spent a year in Quito, Ecuador. It was AMAZING.

The best advice I can give you is to immerse yourself as much as possible in the culture. It is really cool to learn how other people live and perceive life. It will be eye-opening for sure.

Also, share the mushroom experience with some international brothers and create that unity.

I've always fantasized about living on the Irish coast. Ireland seems like an ideal place for me to settle down.

Oh, and Barcelona, Spain is quite possibly the most incredible city I've ever visited. I can DEFINATELY see myself living there somewhere down the road.

I'm Canadian, but I'd assume the experience is similar...

I was in Estonia (Eesti) last year and it was AMAZING. Tallinn, the capital city, has been around since the 1100s and it is by far the most beautiful city I've ever been to. The people are great, the restaurants are great, the whole cultural experience is great. No joke, I would move there tomorrow if I could.

now really... why do you think you can't move there tomorrow?

I'm under the impression that if you're not in the process of doing something you want, you could end up never reaching your goals.

mayfly - The Baltic states sound incredible, it'd be so great to check them out. I had a colleague from Riga, Latvia and they way she spoke about it made me want to visit there.

I do wonder, for those of you who enjoy living in other countries what keeps you from relocating? Friends and family?

Hmm, good point actually. I think I need to make a point of thinking that way more often.

I think money and my boyfriend are the biggest reasons. I can't afford it just now, and I don't think The Boy would be into it (although I might talk him into it someday).

Yeah it's not easy to make the jump overseas and it's a pretty tough adjustment that seems to get increasingly more difficult the older you get and the more commitments you take on.

I'm hoping the wheels are greased for me b/c I have Euro citizenship and hopefully one of the schools I applied to will let me in!

I've lived in Munich, Germany for ten years during childhood and my teen years. I relocated back to the states to live with a part of my family which split up after a failed marriage. I am considering the idea of going back there for a while to see what possibilities and opportunities present themselves.

The company of friends and family sure does put pressure on traveling to another part of the world though. But surely, you got to do what makes you happy. Follow the joy.

What types of jobs would you be looking for in Germany and how hard would it be to get set up over there?

I'm not gonna lie, I was very happy living in Switzerland for a year and had some cousins over there which was a nice treat. What's pushing me in that direction is a combination of being weary of the US and being very infatuated with Europe and its diversity of cultures.

It would be so cool to be once again surrounded by buildings that date back to the Middle Ages rather than these awful strip malls.

I feel that. Cafes instead of the same starbucks.

If I go, school will be the priority. I have an "Aufenthaltserlaubnis" (I guess that's a kind of green card) in my passport which allows me to stay in the country for extended periods. I am not sure how the job situation would work out as there is still some business I would have to attend to with the citizen registration office.

Luckily I know that I would get the support from family in finding a place to study for me. Thinking about it now, it actually sounds like a good idea for me.

:goodluck: with your applications!

Lived in Scotland for a semester, also have spent significant time in Canada and the Bahamas. All three of which are very cool for different reasons. I think I could live in Canada for ever. It seems pretty laid back and I like the fact that they do not have fences on everything that someone could fall off of. Like the wall around Quebec city. The Halifax area is pretty cool to.

Thanks man! One of the great things about schools abroad is the cost: here in the US you're looking at $20-50k/year where in Europe it's not uncommon for undergrad to be free and grad school is usually something like 3-5k/year. Another thing to toss into your considerations.

If you end up applying to any schools let me know! I've been obsessing over applications for months and I may be able to help you out.
