I just PCd a few rye berry jars. About 1inch up from the bottom all the berries burst(oversaturated). Can I still 'noc up the jars?

you can, but those berries might not colonize..
how do the rest of your grains look?
if it's just a few grains i wouldn't be too worried, but if it is a bunch of them and you had adequate supplies of rye berries, i'd start over.

it's not a whole lot maybe 15-20% of the jar, and they are all clumped together on the bottom.

You should be ok... just shake the jars to distribute them. Bang the jars on the carpet if you need help breaking the grain up.

I'm curious to know why berries burst and how to avoid that...
soaked too long?
becasue grains were simmered after soaking? (not sure if resptodd did this or not)
cooked too long?

I've only seem them burst when you simmer too long... Did you put something in the bottom of the PC to keep the jars off the bottom of the cooker?

Yeah, most likely I simmered too long, had alot of shit going on during prep. They were looking great before PCing, they were PCd well above water line. I've never fucked up like this before, but I'm not gonna waste them, I'm gonna 'noc them up anyway.

Personally, I wouldn't inoculate a jar with ten burst kernels, let alone 10%, and you have more than that. I'd start over.
By the way, it doesn't matter how long one simmers. Simmering/boiling doesn't cause burst kernels if you soak first. I've proved this by RAPID boiling for an hour, after a 24 hour soak. No burst kernels and perfect moisture. Rye will only hold so much water. Once it's hydrated, it won't absorb any more. The key is to soak first to soften up the shells. RR

What exactly is the problem with the burst grains that you shouldn't use them?

the water content to be used by the mycelium should be given in a long term kernels not being burst can do this job , burnst kernels other than colonizing slow , will loose their humidity before the ones that are not Peace
