"DuctStat" plug-in thermostat not working... has anyone used one of these?
    #7954932 - 01/30/08 09:53 AM (16 years, 2 days ago)

i'm going to have my bags in my closet with sort of a ghetto space heater setup (walmart hotplate with a fan blowing across the coil. been using it to warm my room regularly w/out safety issues ) going and i wanna use this thing cause i've had it sitting around my place for a while.

basically your supposed to plug it into the wall then plug a device into it. you set if you want it heating or cooling, and if you want the temp setting to be the max or min in the area. the temp setting isn't really temperature it's just a crappy little knob with color circles indicating hotter to colder but whatever. it's got a little thermister (I think that's what it is) that i assume is what's determining the air temp.

so in my closet, I want it plugged into the heater setup so that when the air in there gets below 73 or so, this thing turns on and starts the heater. then once the temps back up past that it'll turn off again, and just keep doing that.

But I can't get the thing to work. I've tried all different combinations of heating and cooling and adjusting the temp sensetivity and blowing hot air and cold air on the sensor and it just won't do anything. it only changes off to on when i change its temp knob a huge amount.

is there a trick to these things that i'm missing? granted they are usually for ducting and thus get a more constant flow of the air of temperature t on the sensor, but I heated the thing up with a lighter to where there's no doubt it was hot enough, and nothin happened. i didn't damage it.... (works just like it did before) just nothin at all happened.

if i can't get this to function, is there a similar small-zone thermostat someone would recommend for the setup i wanna do? maybe somethin a bit better like with a wired remote sensor for the temp?

i'll have it set up similarly for fruiting, but i'll keep each end of the closet open a little more (its one of those 2 door sliding closets) for good air exchange, with an ultrasonic in the room and the fan pulling air from nearby it and on into the closet. this way new air and nice moderate humidity is always circulating, and the space heater is the only thing that runs stop-and-go.

I don't have the right kind of space for a tub in tub setup like a lot of people are using, as these things have to share the closet with my clothes and all that crap. but if i get a thermostat setup right so that my temps stay correct, won't this work just fine for incubation?

thanks for the assistance.

I have used a similar product. 110 outlet controlled by a thermostat.

Mine has a little set screw to adjust the temperature at which the outlet is powered ..... after the temperature increases 3 or 4 degrees above the 'on' temperature setting, the outlet is powered off. (I set mine to go on at 75 degrees and off at 78 and used an incandescent light bulb for heat in a very small closet. I used a thermometer to verify the 'on and off' limits.)

Mine has a 1,000 watt rating .... so you are limited to how big an appliance can be used.

It has worked very well for me. I really liked it .... haven't used it for years as I can do everything at room temperature now. If it weren't packed away, I would include a photo.

Don't know how yours works. ? Good luck figuring it out.

Perhaps you could just leave the light on in the closet? As an electrical engineer and electrician, the idea of someone rigging up a duct t-stat to run a hotplate in a closet space just doesn't sit well. I'm afraid it's a case waiting to happen of your neighbors calling 911 to report smoke and flames from your house while you're gone to work. A high bookshelf should get you the desired temp more safely somewhere else.

hmmmm
you make an interesting point.

I guess what uncle_rico mentioned backs it up well too, that you don't need a large heat source to warm up a little closet.

top shelf might work out if I can find a way to keep it good and dark up there. there's basically no tolerance for light during mycellium growth, correct?

I know that invitro bags in theory humidify themselves during fruiting, but our place is extremely dry. will an ultrasonic on the floor just keeping the room at a good level of human comfort suffice if these things are on the top shelf?

electrical engineer eh? that's pretty sweet i'm a sophomore in ME right now. by any chance did you used to frequent the overgrow forums? I remember there being an electrician or electrical engineer on there who posted quite a bit.

thanks again
