Bittorrents
    #7952381 - 01/29/08 08:00 PM (16 years, 3 days ago)

This may be a little different than normal than most posts in here. but my friend recently got a cease-and-decist type letter from Comcast for downloading torrents. What can he (and me, too, after hearing about it and being paranoid) do to protect his safety on torrents?

peer guardian 2

http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

and that will only do so much..

you can always do proxies and stuff like that..

but just dont download fakes and you'll be legit.. use peerguardian and you'll at least be better off.

Yeah it happened when he downloaded some torrent off of a public tracker.

EDIT: Ugh, fuck peer guardian 2. The thing is a serious piece of shit. I couldn't browse google or half the sites I go to without enabling a million IP's so just fuck that shit, seriously.

Or you could simply hit the "Allow HTTP" button while surfing the interwebz.

And use private trackers.

No. Avoid blocklists like peerguardian as they are useless and simply a sense of false security. IP blockers tend to do more harm than good. they block normal peers more than the "bad" peers (IFPI, BPI, RIAA, MPAA, etc) and these "bad" peers almost never use their own IP ranges to do their snooping - they use normal home addresses these days to monitor IP address that are sharing copyrighted media. As for private trackers, they simply acquire an invite posing to be a normal individual and record IPs from a private home line. See for leaked IFPI / Media Defender emails for reference. IP blockers were effective in 2003 or so, but not anymore.

If you want to be safe while torrenting you have other options:

1. always enable encryption
2. avoid public trackers - stick with the private trackers
3. use a VPN
4. use https if your private tracker allows it

get on it. not very hard to get invited to one. and then build up your ratio to receive your own invites...and trade for more. very easy to do.

How does this protect you, exactly?

avoids ISP snooping and the VPN (I should have said "use a vpn like swissVPN" - not all vpns are the same) will protect your identity.

I've gotten the same letter in the mail once and through email twice. They always say they will cancel my service but they never do. They cite the protocol I was using, i.e. bittorrent, port number, what I was downloading, etc. All well.
