kids books about psychedelics
    #7951690 - 01/29/08 06:03 PM (16 years, 3 days ago)

This is a kids book about hallucinogens.

It's pretty hilarious considering it's trying to prevent kids from being into drugs, but seriously, when I was a kid it probably would have just made me even more curious. Something that makes everything look like an amusement park mirror? Yes please!

What are some better ways to teach kids about drugs? We obviously all agree that the scare tactic bullshit is, well, total bullshit. But at the same time I don't think I'd wanna tell a kid that drugs are fucking great and they should definitly try them. How young is reasonable for a kid to try particular drugs? If you were a parent, what level of involvement would you want to have in guiding your kid through being introduced to weed or psychedelics (assuming they were interested.)

That book looks hilarious--I bet if my dad had known about it when I was a kid he would have bought it for me.

I think that the over-the-top drugs are bad don't do drugs method isn't very helpful--it's a lot like the abstinence only curriculum that's so popular in the US right now--kids are just as curious (possibly more so), except this way they don't actually know anything about what will happen if they do this "bad" thing (have sex, take drugs, etc).

I think the best way would be to just to set it out clearly in health class (like sex ed) and say "this is what happens: this part is good, this part is bad, these are the long term effects" and let kids figure it out by themselves. There needs to be some parental involvement too, though. Parents need to tell their children what behaviour is acceptable to them, of course, but I think it's important for all decisions to be based on facts, rather than (often very biased) opinions.

If/when I have children, I will tell them the facts about any drug they were interested in, tell them about my experiences with it (if I had any), and tell them what was and was not acceptable under my roof. (Weed=yes, meth=no, etc.)

Complete honesty as to the potential dangers of certain drugs. Having had experienced drug-induced psychosis it would be fairly easy to convince them. Once my kids turn 16 I would eat some shrooms with them and go more into depth and explain the benefits of using the safe drugs within moderation.

Funny book....!
This is a tough one, one that I don't think I can answer myself - with respect to age OR how....
If I could see a version of myself that had not tried experimenting with anything my whole life by this point, I might be able to answer.....
Or, if I had kids and had to face such a challenge myself....

I'll probably end up doing what my own dad did: remain mostly silent on the subject of psychedelics unless it is broached by someone else, then make vague statements about how they're very complicated and actually not THAT bad.

It worked for me.

Dr. Seuss books, 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Alice in Wonderland' are what introduced me to the world of pyschedelics.

My favourite highschool teacher told her daughter that if/when she wanted to try weed that she'd smoke her first joint with her. I don't know if the daghter actually took her up on the offer, but it's the thought that counts! My mom. on the other hand, was a paranoid freakshow about alcohol and drugs. I suppose with sort of good reason -- my dad was a pretty intense alcoholic after all. It was just totally over the top though. Maybe it did work, because I definitly have healthy drinking and drug habits, but if she had just calmed down and reasoned with me minus the emotional insanity, it would have probably been better for the both of us.

Hey, I saw this book in the elementary school library for the mentoring program I'm a part of. It made me laugh too. The inside of the book is scarily Big Brother-ish, for real. The info is totally skewed. They have a whole series for every kind of drug. And funny enough, RGV, we actually had a discussion of the production and international distribution of cocaine with these kids (middle school), among other perspective-shifting topics.

Personally, I'd give them information from multiple sources (Erowid is a good place for information, biased though it might be, Wikipedia as well, but definitely a book or two). Then, I'd answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. I'd also try to avoid saying things like 'good' or 'bad'. I'd say things like 'commonly desired effects', 'neutral effects', and 'commonly undesired effects'. Wordy though the terms might be, they might help not to sway the child one way or the other. Then, I'd explain the drugs that I have a preference for and why I take/took them and also explain drugs that I didn't take and the reasons for abstaining. Finally, I'd ask that my kid come to me if and when they're ready to try a drug so that they can experience it in a semi-controlled environment.

Furthermore, this conversation would probably happen around 13-16 years old.

Trip around your kids. When old enough, trip with them.

I tripped with a friend's 3 year old in the room, and he kept giving me a percipient smile, like he was saying "Welcome to my world."

Sure all drugs could be considered unsafe... but mushrooms or mescaline used in a safe set/set setting at a safe dosage would be my choice. My intent would be to connect with the child on such a level that he would understand the benefits and dangers of entheogens and other chemicals. This is something I was never taught when younger, there was no experienced elder to tell me what happens when you go too far out and consume much too much.

Department of redundancy department? A deadly poison used in a safe set/set setting at a safe dosage would be very safe. :yesnod:
