Zone 5a/5b hardwood bed survival during winter?

So, im in the very southern part of vt (I can get on the highway to Mass 200ft from my neighborhood public high school. So, looking at the plant hardiness zone map, It seems that I reside either 5a or 5b area. That is a low of -30 at a maximum low during winter. In the winter right now, it hasnt really dipped below 0 this year and has pretty much stayed between 20 - 35 degrees.
My question is, if I add mulch/hey to the top of my hardwood bed (Psilocybe azur/cyans/blue foot bethany or gym something) in the fall after fruits have been harvested as much as possible, will my bed survive? I can add alot of compost to the top or hay or something so it doesnt get too cold/freeze too much. No preventing the ground freezing unless I packed that fucker high but any suggestions? Any perennial hardwood beds in VT out there?

From what im to understand woodlovers like that tend to do quite well in the cold. Ive seen stories of them fruiting to an extent in the winter for some people.
-------------------- He did not laugh as his eyes stopped in awareness of the earth around him. His face was like a law of nature-a thing one could not question, alter or implore. It had high cheekbones over gaunt, hollow cheeks; gray eyes, cold and steady; a contemptuous mouth, shut tight, the mouth of an executioner or a saint. If you wake up at a different time in a different place, can you wake up a different person? Cf. A.C. Doyle "I'll rise above this, you can't keep me down, for I am Divine, and I know it all too well."

i think they will live even if they completely freeze. The mycelium will find a way. But yes you could add some chips. You are supposed to add at least 1-2 inches of chips per year
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Tahoe has a pretty wife
Yea, I think that I'll set up some sub. jars. Whats the recomended starting substrate for cyans/azurs? Also, if I found woodchips that are white-ish at, say, a local park, could I ASSUME that they're alder or some other useful mushroom wood chip? I live in VT if that makes a dif. about what the chip might be. They're just laying there and I'd LOVE to just pick up some to use for spawn or if they're the bulk supplies, still sweet [/rant]
So, anyways, would a WBS/Rye berry grain substrate be perfect because I have access to alot of this and cheap
