Speaking for Others
    #7950182 - 01/29/08 12:06 PM (16 years, 3 days ago)

How can we speak for others, even about others, without distorting (whether intentionally or inadvertently) the message?

One might say that there is no way, that we should simply retreat into the position of 'speak only for oneself'. But even here, in our own subjective safe havens, our ideas and views are influenced by the ideas of others.

Here's an example to contextualize what I'm talking about: A white professor lectures on the oppression of Blacks in the mid-twentieth century. Would this be an acceptable scenario? Why or why not?

You can speak for yourself while speaking about others.

e.g. Am I understanding this correctly, you are curious about differences that are a result of our individuality as humans, and how that can impact communication across racial, cultural, and time boundaries?

I'm speaking about your message, but from my point of view. Communication doesn't work if I keep my perspective about your message inside, because for all I know I could be misinterpreting the entire thing. Now, if you intend to say that the assumptions people make about another's meaning can be dangerous, I would have to agree. In the case of history, I suppose it works on a consensus basis, and I really don't have a better way to present it, do you?
