Natural or Genetically Engineered Evolution?
    #7949840 - 01/29/08 10:21 AM (16 years, 3 days ago)

Ok in the long run what do you think is best for the human race, natural or genetically engineered evolution?

Natural seems the obvious choice but in order for the human race to survive in the new space age we will probably have to integrate genetic evolution into ourselves in order to survive, and who knows how those genetics will evolve from there...

I find it troubling as if we don't genetically engineer our evolution it could simply be the end of the human race, but if we do we might not truly be human anymore, i don't think theres a possible comprimise between the two?

I guess the human race are doomed to extinction at some point unless theres other human life in millions of solar systems. If we're all living we all must die at somepoint so just let nature run its course, but maybe its in our nature to do whatever it takes to survive!

Thoughts?

It is in the nature of all living things to do what it takes to survive. We have already modified the genetics of most food plants and to a lesser extent animals. We did this in order to feed more people, a mistake, but that is slightly off topic.

As far as "what is best for the human race", I think you already have your opinion when you said that all life must die at some point so let nature run its course.

Altering genetics is a risky business. We know a fair amount about different genes coding for individual proteins, but it is more difficult to predict the total effect of adding a "foreign" gene to a genome.

What you might consider is that evolution is not the same as progression.

Once the sin against God was the greatest sin; but God has died, and those sinners died with him. To sin against the earth is now the most dreadful sin, and to esteem the entrails of the unknowable higher than the meaning of the earth!
