    #794948 - 08/03/02 11:10 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

How would one benifit from isolating a wild strain? And how exaclty would one go about doing this? I think I have a good idea but I'm not sure, so why not ask
Thanks..

2 ways are possible to isolate a new strain from the wild.

first, cloning the mushroom on agar. Most of the edible cultures on the market come from this path.

2nd way is to collect the spores, then germinate the spores on agar (special formulations enter the game here, normally some antibiothic is added to prevent the grow of bacteria instead of the mycelium), then isolate a clean culture for testing, until a pure, fruiting culture is found.

the benefits are new fresh genetics and perhaps some characteristic of the strain (potency, if talking about active ones, or early fruiting, of temperature tolerant etc.)
