 My mom just had an anxiety attack

so i was at the library finishing up homework, and i got home to my sister being home alone and she said my mom had an anxiety attack about 30 minutes ago and really wanted to go to the hospital. apparently she just started freaking out and feeling like she was dying and my dad was trying to calm her down. he called 911 and they came and told her there isn't anything wrong, she just needs to relax, and that flipped her out even more, she thought they aren't trying to help her.
so they went to the hospital, and i got my sister and went. she seemed mellowed out, i think she just needs a good nights rest. apparently she's been taking prozac since her father died a couple of months ago, and i believe that is the cause of this. i tried talking to her about stopping the prozac and actually getting help from a therapist rather than drugging her emotions away.
anyway, i'm back home with my sister, my dads still chilling with her, she seemed to be getting tired, probably gonna sleep there and come home in the morning.
man, emotional breakdowns are intense.

They are indeed. I have had two major breakdowns in my lifetime and I'm only 18. Inability to speak, time slows down, trouble breathing, sweating, crazy heart rate, its a nightmare.

Prozac is evil. I tried walking that road once, and it caused far more trouble than it was worth... nearly ruined my relationship with my sister.
Though, that came from just dropping off the dosage from what I was at to nothing at all... bad way to stop. You hae to ween yourself off of that shit.
On its own I don't know how it could cause a panic attack or anything.
Sorry to hear that, either way. I know how stressful family shit can be.

They put me on benzodiazepines. I hated it, they slowed me down and made me appear mentally challenged or something. Almost unresponsive. Those were dark times indeed.

I never felt slowed down or anything by the prozac... actually I did experience a degree of mental clarity...
But I remember when coming off of them... probably a week into having dropped my dosage to zero...
I was in the car with my buddy, and we were coming home for picking up food and smokes... I was fine, absolutely nothing to be pissed/worried about... and all of a sudden this immense feeling of despair washed over me in the car... almost broke down crying right there... and I'm not the crying type to put it in prospective... very frightening to go through. Things only got worse from there.
To the OP: Has your mom told you what was going on leading up to the attack?

Prozac is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, I wouldn't expect you to be slowed down I wouldn't think. Although these days the SSRI's have anti-anxiety properties along with the depression treatment so idk...

yea my mom's mom agreed to come here for at least a year (she lives in germany). they're both having problems so they see it best they go through it together. and my moms promised to stop the prozac.

so... last night as i was getting some water i saw a wrapper and i went to throw it away... and behold... it was a pot brownie wrapper. i just then remembered on my birthday while i was hammered someone got me a 1.5g brownie, i had .5, he had .5, and i completely forgot about the .5 in the fridge....
so my mom was just baked as fuck. now i know i should tell her it was weed, not a panic attack, and that would hopefully calm her, but i wanna see if there are any opinions on why i should just leave it be.
p.s. its the next morning and she doing fine, just shocked from the night before

nah it was in the fridge, and i'm pretty sure it was pretty well hidden. and i can't believe she ate that horrible tasting sketchy looking brownie without thinking there's something weird with it...
god i'm dreading this, i'm gonna get the "you're becoming irresponsible with drugs" speech again...

You should start by asking, "Mom, did you eat some random shit out of the fridge yesterday?" If she says yes, then ask her WTF SHE WAS THINKING?! She may have tripped off mold or something. Leave the pot part out until you've assessed the situation better.

I also agree what you reccomended to her. Pills are not the solution to life's problems, when emotions should be talked out by using listeners to ease the anxiety.
My mom still can't get over both my parents death even though they died in the 90s and later 90s, those were the closest family she ever had. But to support the situation I remember their birthdays and death anniversaries, since she keeps things sentimental.

well... i know for a fact that she ate it, because she's only smoked like twice, and that was way back in her youth, so she probably didn't remember what being high was like. if it was my dad, he would have told me he's high as balls.
think there's any way to milk down this story and make it easier on myself and her?

You could say that you are sorry, but again, why was she eating old as dirt food outta the fridge. God knows if I leave something in the fridge to eat or save for eating, I give it a week tops. It's a definite no go if I don't remember/know what it is.

Wow, sorry to hear about your mom. I remember when prozac 1st came out people were getting off murder charges for being on prozac. There were several people who murdered people when they detoxed from it and weird shit like that. They must have changed the formula for it to still be in production.My wife used to take prozac and didn't like it, now she takes effexor instead and doesn't have any problems. I get real bad anxiety too and that was why I kept going back to heroin. It would stop it immediately at 1st but it made me an emotional wreck. You need to get your mom to realize that if she knows it is a panic attack, then she also knows it isn't real. As much as it still freaks me out I make myself think about the fact that nothing is happening that can hurt me, that removes the fear of it and with a few deep breaths it's over. I lost some samples for 2 jobs and had an anxiety attack this morning but it changed to a pshychotic break. It took all my power to not tell my wife I hate her, though I really don't but I got distracted cuz she wouldn't leave me alone and that was why I lost em. I smashed an antique chair too that I feel so bad about. We have an antique hardwood table with 4 chairs, now 3....I feel so bad to what it does to people around me. Your mom is hurting inside. Something hurt her bad somewhere along the line. I know my problems are in relation to my past, it still makes it hard though I can say most of the time I don't want to die anymore....though today is an exception, so just try to cut her as much slack as possible but tell her what I said too. She has to remind herself that her phisiology is off but there is nothing to fear. And smoke some pot...that is the quickest solution I have found that isn't narcotic....lol
