Casing straight Rye Berries vs spawn to X then case, pros and cons

There doesn't seem to be much info out on this, maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
A friend has got some colonized rye berries. I'm debating whether to just break up the kernels in the jar and lay them down in a tray with a casing layer, or to spawn in a tray to say, horse manure (or whatever suggestions you may have), and then case.
Can anyone share their experiences with either or both? I'm interested in yields, time to harvest, and general pain in the ass factors.
Thanks

For one thing, if you're gonna refer to yourself as "a friend" you should keep using it instead of just reverting to "I".
The consensus seems to be that cased rye does pretty poorly compared to a bulk substrate grow. I've never fruited straight from rye so I can't offer any personal experience, but I've had great yields from grain spawned to coir, which is pretty cheap, easy to find, and easy to prepare.

You just asked enough questions to make a book. But we got something better than that. We got the shroomery search engine!
All your questions in your post are answered here in the faqs first off, and second, in the searchable post database, and see all the conversation inbetween.
Your idea of spawning to poo is right on the money. But some other substrate material might be useful. Check out the caseing 101 tek.

?? I appreciate your help but the casing 101 tek has nothing to do with rye berries or spawning to a bulk substrate. http://www.shroomery.org/50/Casing-101
It's for PF style cakes and just cased normally.
Is the following tek a good one to follow? I know some of the teks here seem pretty flaky: http://www.shroomery.org/55/60-40-Vermiculite-and-Coco-Coir-Casing-Tek
That's funny that PF cakes do alright when cased normally, but rye doesn't do well...

Casing rye directly is faster to harvest. Spawning to bulk adds roughly two to three weeks to the time frame, but provides for increased harvest. Not bigger or more potent, but more quantity. That's about the only difference, provided each method is done properly. RR

Wow RR is on the ball. I don't know how he does it. The other thing to note is spawning to bulk has got to increase contamination risk, for the simple fact it is exposed to the elements for more time. Sounds like experiment time!
And another thing i've been wondering, when did this trend of calling it poo start? what ever happened to manure? Or even dung?
