My idea for a FC. Tell me if this looks good?
    #7947370 - 01/28/08 08:08 PM (16 years, 4 days ago)

Well, here it is. Thanks MS paint.

Please tell me if you think it is good or not. I will be constructing ASAP. The computer fans would be siliconed on with a small piece of plexiglass. I will need to control the temp as this will be in the garage which is not heated. I have a semi-sterile room for all of my knocking and transfers/incubating. I have an oil type Radiator heater in there and the room is small enough that I can keep it at 77-80 degrees. Pitch dark in there as well.

Here is my FC

ok, I see it now.

I'm very new to this hobby so I'm replying with little experience here.
I think its too complicated. Why not try something simple and proven? Its your show though man. Down for pics if you build it.

Is the FC a refrigerator or upright freezer carcass?

If it is, they are insulated and will maintain the raised temperature longer than a plastic storage bin in your cold garage.

Once .... years ago .... I thought of heating a upright freezer FC using a hair / blow dryer plugged into a thermostatically controlled outlet. My thermostatic control operates across an adjustable 3 degree range .... temp. drops to, say, 74, the outlet is powered and the hair dryer goes on ...... temp. increases to 77, outlet is deactivated ... hair dryer goes off. I thought the hair dryer fan would also help with FAE ... (although back then I wasn't thinking about FAE ... we were worried about CO2 elimination ....) Anyway, I used a light bulb for heat and never got around to the hair dryer.

Looks wild.

Good luck.

Well, I have all of the stuff to make anything short of a ginormous FC. I want the best most efficiant FC I can build. I won't have to come out of pocket for any of the materials, I have everything waiting to be used. I just want to know what some of you all think about it.

How do you all think I should cycle the fogger, cool mist and FAE?

Well i think it could work a little advanced the best way to cycle stuff is to run it man, test it out with just your gauges until you get it perfect before you use it, so maybe go a few days with a certain time on your timers then check it out. if its really good then turn your timers lower so you can see your minimum you need to conserve energy trial and error will work the best i am sure

One thing that may not be good is mushies usually dont like direct air blown on them it can dry them out, and if your room is not sanitary or is really dusty you may want to consider some sort of filter like a coffee filter just taped over so no extra dust and dirt gets pumped in

or as an alternative, have the fans flipped so the suck are out instead of blowing it in.

This would help with a more genle air flow while still bringing in plenty of fresh air from other holes

What an idea. I thought the point was to get FAE onto the casing surface. If it is just a general exchange of stale air, I could use the fans in reverse no problem....

The idea is to get rid of the co2 build up thats all so it would work marvelously in reverse but again same thing on other wholes some kinda cheap filtration wouldnt hurt its not totally necessary but like i said cant hurt

I would try putting the fan, or fans? on the lid of the 5 gal bucket.  Then you would be blowing fresh air into the FC and it would have good RH due to the fish bubbler.  Run the fan and the bubbler all the time and put the fogger on a timer.  Just another option.

I would disagree with you on that one he is using a big chamber and pc fans dont kick out that much air unless he had it not stop but i dont think thats what he is planning and to be 100% automated its better to have a little extra then not enough 4 maybe over kill but 1 may not be enough

If you use a fish pump(s) that pushes 2-3 times the volume of the chamber per hour, you can cut the fan part out completely. That is what I would, and did, do.

Interesting I was just looking into a way to do good FAE in a similar style FC. I already have a good ultrasonic so humidity is almost no problem whatsoever how did you do your setup with the air pump?

I'd have to agree that some of this seems like overkill.

I have never made a Martha (greenhouse grow chamber) so take what i say with a few grains of salt. These are just my opinions.

For FAE, you simply need an exhaust fan at the bottom and a hole with a filter at the top. CO2 is heavier than Oxygen so it will make it's way to the bottom of the chamber anyway and the amount of CO2 those mushies produce won't be greater than the amount of air that the fan will move. If you really want to be sure go with 2 fans sucking air out the bottom. More than that and you'll have strong air currents in your chamber that will cause casings to dry out faster and inconsistent humidity levels.

I would think that one cool mist would be sufficient as well. If you ran 1 cool mist 24/7, you'd be pumping liters upon liters into the chamber. That would be more than enough and prolly too much.

Now, the lights. I would try to keep all lights above the casings. Those lights on the side will cause the mushies on that level to grow a little sideways. That doesn't really matter i suppose but i like pretty flushes lol. How to go about this I'm not sure. You could prolly get away with 3 light strips on the top if you put them as far out as possible.

Ok there's my 2 cents. Don't take it too seriously!

It's like trying to put a jet engine on a hang glider. It ain't gonna work.

There's plenty of information around here on mini-greenhouses and also detailed explanations of how to set them up and why you want to have them in a room the proper temperature, not a cold or hot garage. I've written dozens of pages on it and I won't re-type it all here. If you're interested in how I do it, search my username and the word mini-greenhouse.
Good luck.
