Putting together a Photographic Mushroom Field Guide

So I've come to notice that every field guide on mushrooms I ever find always has just a single photograph of the mushroom (we all know fungi can look astoundingly different even if it's the same species). I was thinking of putting together a photographic field guide over the next few years by traveling and hunting all species of mushrooms (for research and photographic purposes), and I want to put together an online field guide with a minimum of around 10 different high quality image samples from the cap to the gills.
I don't know if I want to do it online or maybe even publish a book though later on...
Of course this field guide would cover every species and type of mushroom possible. :o

get a really good camera. learn how to identify mushrooms macroscopically and then learn how to back up each of your identifications with a microscope. or send all of the samples in to a professional mycologist to identify them for you,, if they have the time to do something like that for you.
or just get a really good camera and photograph the fungi as art and do not label anything.

Get a microscope, you'll want to include those features as well.

If you want to sell it, printing costs would be the downfall. 10 colour pictures of every mushroom is going to be hellishy expensive, and when there are adequate guides out there it'll be hard to convince the market to spend. I think an e-book would be more successful but obviously less lucrative. Perhaps corner a few sponsors to stick a few ads in there and release it to the four corners of the globe for free. Pay me 10% for the ad idea.

I guess you can make a cafepress book for free. You can make the most crazy book ever, it doesn't get printed until someone buys it.

If you want to be serious about it, for every species you put in the book you will need to make a proper voucher collection and put the collection into a registered mycological herbarium. No matter how good you are some of your IDs will end up being wrong (or at least suspected of being wrong), and those voucher collections are how somebody can figure out exactly what you actually have in your photos and descriptions.
Happy mushrooming!

Props to you my good man!
Maybe this and this can help.
I'd love to see somebody finish the above threads.
I don't have the time.

I've already got the Digital SLR system with a very high end 1:1 ratio 180mm macro lens, I'm also getting some equipment for "off-Camera" flash units.
Here are a couple examples.

*Edit*
Also keep in mind this is going to cover every species from inedible and nonactive to medicinal. It's not going to target any specific type.

I think you are going to need much more than the next few years to accomplish this if its even possible. I'd suggest focusing on a specific genus or locality. Maybe just the Psilocybes of the Eastern US or Chanterelles of the world.
Just to put this into perspective lets look at a single genus. Alexander Smith's monograph on the genus Psathyrella describes 414 species in North America alone, many of these collected only once. It would take decades to get photos of all these species if all of them could even be found. Not to mention they all are boring little brown and grey mushrooms that aren't all that photogenic.

I'll start with westcoast and PNW for the next few years. It'll probably take many years to complete, but it'll be constantly updated. Possibility multiple photographers getting involved might be a good idea.

Let's see, 10 pictures of each species, and only something like 30000 named species of fleshy fungi – hey, no problem.

Yup.
Yes but like I said, an online database. Meaning more than just one person can contribute.

Oh, I see. Have you heard of Mushroom Observer?:

Similar idea. Still, even with multiple participants, the idea of getting photos of every named species is a pretty tall order.
