About to start soon, questions about air/CO2 in jars AND fruit chamber, also about tape?
    #7946615 - 01/28/08 06:12 PM (16 years, 4 days ago)

I got pretty much everything down by now except for these last few tiny specific questions.

First off, I got some tape, "Paper Surgical Tape," but it only says porous on the box, nowhere are the words microporous or micropore to be found. Just "Hypoallergenic (Porous)" - will this tape suffice or will I have to go get better kind?

Also, I know that while colonizing/incubating in the jars, they DO need air but not much, will tape over the four holes, AND jar lids, AND aluminum foil, AND in a CLOSED plastic box, AND on a shelf closed up (for warmth and darkness) by a blanket, still be giving it enough air and allowing for proper CO2 release?

And finally, about the air holes in the fruiting chamber, after reading a bunch of posts, I've decided not to cover them with polyfil or anything, I will probably still fan, but the holes, I've heard that they should be low on the box, as it is most effective for preventing contams, even though contams while fruiting are very rare to begin with. Anyway, to my question, if I put holes where the perlite is, near the bottom or even on the underside of the chamber, wouldn't water leak? Or wouldn't water escape faster? Or what? Yes, I intend to mist multiple times a day.

Any input appreciated, and wish me luck, thanks!

Loose the aluminum foil if you have your holes covered.

I would cut holes just above your perlite level. Mushrooms produce C02 which is heavier than air, hence having holes near the bottom of your chamber is key. Get a fish tank bubbler for some FAE instead of fanning so much.

Thanks, but which would you reccomend? Just aluminum, or just tape?

Also, I need people to answer my other questions, like is the kind of tape I have the correct kind.

If you're referring to RR's shotgun fruiting chamber, no water won't leak. Your FC shouldn't have standing water. Also it is reccomended to elevate the FC with some legs or somthing of that nature, otherwise the holes in the bottom don't do any good for expunging the CO2.

My understanding is that if the tape says something like "breathable" it should be fine. and if it is surgical tape then surely it is.

What kind of substrate are you using?

For my grain I have 1 small hole just big enough for the needle covered with micropore tape on the side and a 3/4 inch hole in the middle stuffed with polyfil.

for brf I have 4 holes covered with tape.

I don't think its recommended to keep the foil on while incubating. The tape should do just fine.

Just my 2 cents and what I've found through research

So tape alone works better than foil alone? I already have 1/2pint jars with metal lids with four holes in each, just wondering if I should use tape or foil.

Also, the jars are gonna be in a tupperware plastic box with a lid that locks closed, AND on shelf covered by a blanket so if anyone thinks one or both of those things will mess up the oxygen/CO2 exchange... I could just put them on a shelf alone, but I dunno, it wouldn't really be an incubation chamber then.

So I'll put holes above the perlite level... not sure how many or how big.

Oh and for the record, it's verm/brf cakes, and the tape only says: Paper Surgical Tape, Dynarex Corp., Hypoallergenic (Porous), Made in China.

RR suggests to just leave the jars on a shelf in a place where you feel comfortable in just a t-shirt so in a locked box covered in a blanket doesn't really seem like a good idea.

Yeah but the thing is, it's really cold here, 30's - 50's at night, it got down to 28 a few nights ago. I do have a small electric heater in my room, but it only helps a little. The idea behind the shelf (think of like a wooden box with five sides, and on the sixth side is open, where the blanket goes) is to keep it warm. With my heater on, and a small heating pad (not touching the box or the jars) inside the shelf with the blanket, I've been able to maintain 70 - 80 degrees for days, despite how cold or hot it gets. Florida reeeeeeeeally likes to fluctuate from super hot to super cold during Winter.

Still having a bit of a hard time picturing what your planning but it seems you're facing the same problems I am.

Winter here in oregon has the temp in my room bout 60(try not to run much heat). My solution is to put my space heater in my closet on a high shelf. I insulated the major cracks to help keep the heat in. After some testing I can maintain a temp of 84 at the very top for incubation while the shelf below is 75 (perfect for my fc tubs)

Since the heater is so high up it doesn't take much to get the temp up.

Sorry about the grainy text, it's because of the image compression, right-click > view image to see it clearer if needed. Anyway, this is my setup, and I have the box and jars (with no substrate yet) in there and like I've said I can maintain 70 - 80, never going below or above those two numbers, no matter how cold or hot it gets outside of this enclosement.

Oh and when I said how many holes and how big, I was talking about in the fruiting chamber which I haven't made yet, not the jars. I know around the bottom near the wet perlite, and maybe in the direct bottom so long as perlite or water doesn't drip out, and to elevate the chamber, but how big and any more than that? Middle, top?

Jars have holes already. Just haven't decided if I'm to use tape or foil or even if my "porous" tape has any differences with "microporous" tape.

Do a search for RR's shotgun fruiting chamber.
