kicking the weed

i have a 4 year smoking habit, both weed and cigarettes.
i need to kick weed. then cigarettes.
i made the descision today in a dream before i woke up that i need to stop being a pothead.
what has worked for you or anyone you may know?
it is not an option for me to distance myself from smoking friends and family.
i really think it has been blocking me from doing many things. i want it to not be somethihng i do very often at all.
i think maybe i will start programming monthly trips to help me do this.

i havent smoked pot in a little over 2 weeks now. i started smoking when i was about 13 and in between now and then the only other time i quit was for about 2 months when i was on probation. im enjoying the sober life. the reason i stopped this time is because i am job searching and i really cannot afford to fail. however i have a feeling that once i do get a job and its safe to smoke again, i will not. im sure i will smoke occasionally. but i think this is the beginning of a new phase in my life. i am looking forward to it.
i smoked cigs from the age of 13 as well, and i finally kicked those about 3 years ago.

i had been smoking for 4 years
i stopped my daily habit a little before new years, and have made a few exceptions over the last month (birthday, new years, close friends i haven't seen in a while)
but honestly, all the motivation you should need to quit is how amazing your mind and body will feel afterwards. just remember, it's going to take some time for your chemistry to adjust to not having thc in your system...and sleep may be difficult for the first week or so
i never thought i'd be one who turned my back on such a wonderful chemical and beautiful plant but...

I'm going on a break for about a month. Got a court date that I may or may not have to be drug tested, but I'm not going to risk that shit. Quitting pot shouldn't be hard as long as you're still in control, rather than handing the power over to the pot.
As for cigarettes, good luck with that one. Unlike pot, cigarettes physically alters your brain function and it produces withdrawal symptoms when you stop smoking. One thing that may help that is reducing the frequency you smoke. I highly recommend a hookah. While it will pretty much deliver the same amount of nicotine as a pack or 2, if you only do it once or twice a week, you'll be breaking the habit of smoking. Then you can cut back your dependency.

I quit a daily smoking habit back in november. I was in a job I hated, and came "this close" to getting a much better one, only to have my hopes dashed at the last minute by a failed hair test. I was so pissed off, I just quit everything. Since then, I have been letting alcohol creep back in here and there, but I haven't smoked pot.
The downside is, I miss the perspective altering effects of the herb. It's a great drug for contemplation of big ideas, especially spiritually. The upside is, my lucid dreaming practice has taken off due to an incredible improvement in my dream recall, and my ability to concentrate during meditation. The herb takes a toll on one's ability to cultivate awareness; ironically, I think, since concentration while actually stoned is improved in a lot of ways.
Nowadays, I think the biggest risk associated with smoking is the societal side effects (trouble getting a job, jail, misperceptions of stoners, etc.), and I hope that changes in the future.
Good luck in quitting, BTW. For sleep, I had no problems, but melatonin has worked really well for me, too. Just my 2¢

I quit weed a few months back because every time I smoked I would get crippling paranoia and very very negative thoughts. It just was not only not fun but overwhelmingly negative so I stopped. It was a no-brainer for me. Since I've stopped I've noticed that I regained the quick wit that I used to have before I started smoking regularly and no longer feel like I'm in a permanent daze.
The majority of my friends still smoke and it's interesting to see their reactions when they see that I'm not smoking anymore. A lot of times they're incredulous that I wouldn't wanna get high and lay on the peer pressure. Wonder what's up with that...

Do not just quit it.. And do not try to quit it..
If one try to quit, one have to take one, to be able to quit it..
Say you have no "smoke" in your hand.. Then you have quit! You quit smoking the moment you put the last "smoke" out..
So, you have quit!
But, if you then want to quit.. You have to start again..
Kind of like taking a hat off, only to be able to take on the hat..
Is that possible to make sense of?
Also.. Mind the gap.. If you stop smoking, you will have a huge gap in your "daily subconscious routine" .. it really needs to be filled with something new.. (Like walking in the forest, and/or anything ...) ...
"Mind the gap!" ~ Some person ..
(Messy post, but PS: I would rather focus on not starting again.. (I know most of you probably see this as semantics, and it is, but look in to it!))

Gomp your posts are always so thought provoking. I can't tell if you speak wisdom or craziness. They tend to sound the same anyway.
Anyway, I am giving up smoking for a while as well. I was going to start a whole new thread about, but this will do. I don't know if I should give it up for lent (40 days) or wait until 420. I guess I'll just take it one day at a time. Anybody know how to fill the gap? I haven't really missed it yet but I am sure this weekend will be a battle. All my friend smoke so I need to dust off the self control and JUST DO IT

I'm in college, and trying to quit weed as well. I think I am much more clear-minded when I don't smoke, but sometimes I just get so anxious, or restless. Then, I go and look for pot, then since I have it sitting around, I smoke it. Then I quit for 5 days, and around we go. Maybe if we all communicate with each other, we can provide moral support!

ok i think i might smoke this weekend. i thought about the reasons why i stopped and I couldn't think of a single one. maybe i should just do it on the weekends? if anyone could tell me why i should stop (or try to) then that might help... maybe?

here was my reasoning:
cons
sinuses stuff up/excessive discharge of mucus
smoking is not good for the lungs, period
muscles tense up (despite not feeling anxious)
teeth lightly staining
mood change/swings (i feel happier, steadily, without)
expensive
less legal risk(s)
somewhat of a lack of concentration, especially in school, but this could take time to change...not to mention my focus on things that i consider shit was never really there anyways

thats not for us to decide, you have to want it or not.
i stopped because im looking for a new job. and i just so happen to enjoy being sober, having all of the extra energy and short term memory. so i may only smoke on special occasions in the future.
its all up to you man.

I know I'm the only person that can make the decision. I just wanted to hear some things that would remind me why I stopped in the first place. It is hard to stay sober when you can't remember why you stopped in the fist place. I realized that I could make progress (I'm kinda in a rut) with or without weed. I really don't get anxious or anything. It is an extremely good stress reliever for me. I am thinking of smoking only when I meet goals.
I guess this will be an official tolerance break. It was begining to lose the magic
