I've had a 2ft. bale of canadian spagnum peat for about 6 months now
i noticed that its actually broken down a little bit since i bought it
it turned more of a dark brown color, and is very fine

I went to lowes today and found some new peat.
Upon opening the bag i noticed it was a light tan color and had more texture

This stuff will be fine, right ?

Peat won't break down, it's thousands of years old.

Bogs are thousands of years old... I don't think that's true of the peat moss that grows there, though.

I'm assuming you are going to use the peat as part of a casing material like the 50/50+? Peat is an organic material and will break down over time, but I doubt 6 months would be enough time to render it unusable. There will be a color difference between the two bags due to moisture content. When peat dries out it gets lighter. There could also be a difference in the peat due to the different growing conditions or possibly genetics. IMHO you should be just fine using either bag.
