Salt in Coir
    #7946054 - 01/28/08 04:24 PM (16 years, 4 days ago)

Hello everyone, right now i've got three rye mycobags growing, which I cased with coir. I've read that if you add salt to the coir it will prevent mold from growing. Will this also prevent mycelium from growing?
Could be an easy alternative to pasturizing.

Don't use coir in a casing, and never use salt for mycology.

Some coir has high sodium which is not the best.

I am sure you he meant to say- that he spawned his rye to coir, whitch is 100% a-ok.

No, don't add any salt.

Coir is your SUBSTRATE is okay. COIR is your CASEING is only good in TINY amounts (10-20 to 1) just for texture (but there are better things)

CASEING layers should have NO NUTRITIVE MATERIALS. You do not want your myc to feed on the caseing layer - you want it to notice that dinner time is over and he has hit the end of where it can grow and that it better shoot up some mush.

There is no -alternative- to pasurization - either it IS or it ISN'T.

If you have something start growing on your cake that shouldnt be there and you need 3 or 4 days for a flush you cover the invader with salt to dry out damage and slow it down.

For salt in coir. Some coir like my cheep cheep coir has salt in it when you buy it from being packaged collected whatever on the beach. I also get alot of sand in mine along with some seeds that are about the size double the size of a mj seed. So ya have to leach it.
