This video sent shivers down my spine. Its that good.
Then afterwards I watched the NIN version and was shocked at how poor they are. I feel this video is almost middle finger to NIN.. as there is so much more actual emotion and actual pain in this song / video... An old man reflecting on his life as time slips away from him.
Damn I just can't get over how good this is

Agreed. I've heard that song dozens of times, and it never gets less incredible.

what do you mean the nine inch nail version?
fuck that man..
dont get me wrong i love johnny cash but his song doesn't do the original justice. he didn't write it. he just sang it.
i love johnny cash and he's awesome and rest his soul but i seriously doubt that he picked out this song to play as like his last thing looking back. i dont think that was the intention of the song in the first place. it fits, but it is not the intention of the song.
it was public relations/media move to get johnny some final exposure before he expires. as i said, i'm not knocking cash because he's awesome and i'm sure trent reznor is honored to have him cover his song, but it's not the 'nin version'
it's a nine inch nails song and johnny cash covered it. you are more partial to the johnny cash media-friendly remix.

Is it so hard to believe he just liked the song?
He covered Soundgarden's Rusty Cage back in 1996. The man had diverse tastes.

This video jerked a tear out of me the first time that I saw this video. I was tripping pretty hard and it just made me so sad to see Johnny bearing his soul like that.
The NIN version is my favorite version of this song, though. Trent really floored me with this closer to the Downward Spiral album.

I am aware of this, but compared to Johnny Cash's rendition, NIN ain't got nuttin.
Seriously, everything about this song is perfect. Trent Reznor hasn't experienced anything man in comparison, this is why the NIN version of the song lacks. This song is the embodiment of what I imagine it feels like to be waiting to die, alone, seeing your friends and family disappear around you.
This song is flowing with emotion hence why it is >>> than the NIN version.

johnny cash normally did music you felt, original or covers, it's the way he delivers it.

I prefer the original version, but I still like Cash's cover of it. The original certainly doesn't lack emotion; it still makes me sad to hear that song. Guess it all comes down to personal preference.

Johnny Cash presented that song with more sincerity and feeling behind it than Trent did.
I like NIN and Cash, But Cash Owns "Hurt" as far as I'm concerned.

Cash's hurt is beautiful, especially the music video. As far as I'm concerned, nine inch nails is doing the cover.
And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
Makes me want to cry every time. Perfectly captures the essence of an old man watching everyone he knows and cares about passing away with time and knowing that inevitably he will join them. Jesus
