Spore vending machines

Just an Idea I've been tossing around for a while now. I'm about a year away from graduating with a bachelors in technology, so I'm perfectly capable of designing and building my own vending machines. One of the things I've been thinking about selling this way is mushroom spores.
Make them small and unnoticeable from the outside, like an old refrigerator sitting behind an old barn, or out in some woods a few yards from the road. Open the freezer door and there would be a control panel to insert cash, make selections and receive product.
Location wise, I'm thinking rural areas in between cities, especially college towns. Put them 10-20 miles out of town, or further if there is an interstate near by.
I would own and operate at least a few machines, but mainly I'm thinking that I would build and sell the machines. One person by themselves could manage a few machines within a 100 mile radius of where they live. Any further than that and they would be basically living on the road refilling machines and collecting money all the time. Maintenance would be another issue, as would be vandalism.

How much (including time) do you think it would cost you to design and test a working model?
There would seem to be a lot of risk. Location would mean everything. Not exactly an easy product for the owner/operators to market, getting people to drive to out of the way places and not being able to advertise conventionally. Security and temperature control are other issues... you better build it like a fort!

Depends on what you mean by "working model".
I could build a machine that spits out little boxes whenever you press a button for less than $50 in one afternoon.
Bill acceptors usually run at least $300 new. Change acceptors cost about $75, but would people be willing to go through the extra trouble of getting rolls of quarters to use the machine? I can probably use a cheap $50 microcontroller to coordinate all the parts.
The spores and cash could be kept in an underground vault beneath the machine. This could be made from concrete and rebar several inches thick. Being underground would also help control temperature.
I think I could put almost everything underground except for the part that takes the money and the parts that move the product from the vault to the customer.
I might could do it for as little as $500 if I used a change acceptor instead of a bill acceptor. The above ground parts would only be maybe $150-$200 of that.
Building and installing one would be about a weeks work for one person. Installation would account for at least one day of that. That would include digging the hole, and casting the vault in place.
Any climate control beyond the natural properties of an underground vault would probably require being connected to "the grid". Otherwise it could run off of a regular car battery.
I think I like this idea for its novelty more than for its practicality or profitability. The return on investment would be slow, and it would be difficult to find a place where someone would let you put it.
If you had a location that had access to grid power, it would probably be just as economical (if not moreso) to just use a slightly modified used soda machine, and put spores in cylindrical containers the exact size and shape of soda cans. It could even still vend some soda.

Just hypothetically it's too bad it's illegal because I bet the dispenser would be easily profitable if it sold mushrooms instead of spores. The problem is spores are an on the grid good it doesn't mater. Too bad it's illegal though because mushrooms are quite often sold in secrecy kinda the perfect conditions, oh well.

if you sold psychoactive spores, it might raise a few eyebrows about where they are coming from and who is growing/supplying them for the machines. and i could imagine that a law-maker of sorts would see one of those machines and ideas about banning them somehow would mushroom cloud in his head.
man. really. some bizarre things would happen to those machines is my guess.
and, not too many people just drive out to their rural area spore vending machine to buy their favorite edible strains every day.
it is a idea though, i do not see why not trying it, how would anyone know how it would work out because no one has ever done it before

Another problem is that anybody could buy spores there, including kids. Carding people would be more or less out of the question.
I think my inspiration for this comes from an old grow store that used to be about 30 miles from the town where I first went to college after moving out of my parents house back in the day. It was in an old wooden shack alongside a rural highway surrounded by woods and cow fields. Among other things, they carried the old Homestead mushroom kits, which I bought for $60.
I bought one there, but I wasn't able to get it to work. I'd never even heard of the PF Tek, or the "Information Superhighway" at that point.
He got busted for growing quite a bit of weed shortly after and that was the end of that. I think dude was smoking herb in the store behind the counter while he was working.
It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my life. I think that place was magic or something.

i feel like the startup costs required to get such a thing going would be too high to gain profit on such a small market.
Plus i feel as though they would get shut down via police quite quick.
but i do wish they existed

How about disguising your spores as a nutritional supplement? Become a MLM distributor of Herbalife or Shaklee, make legitimate looking labels or containers and distribute your self manufactured goods along with the company produced ones. Use their meetings to look for prospects to help distribute your products too.

there's actually already a pretty good biz model for selling spores, check out the sponser's forum.
using the internet, spore sellers are able to economically target their market. your plan involves doing the opposite of that.

That's because its main function isn't to make a profit selling spores. It's to lure people into a cult.
Then I make money through multi-level marketing.

It's been done with herb...
Set it up next to a college campus and put a poster on it. I'd use a regular machine and put prints in it. Maybe near a pharmacy?
Or put one up in Amsterdam or something like that with fresh mushies

So, I'm ready to do this.

Good luck with installing spore vending machines in the U.S. Regulations, insurance, licensing fees etc. will eat your asshole out alive.
Then there's the volatile legal climate. Before you know it people are railing against "Speedyshroomz" brand spore dispensers, government lawyers are filing lawsuits against you requiring you to halt operations, you're losing money, etc. etc.
Be careful with the gray market, especially making trying to play a white market with gray market goods. They will change the law and steal your shit faster than your head can turn.
That said where there is risk, there is opportunity.
