Grab A Mixtape, Groove, Be Happy!
    #7944496 - 01/28/08 09:52 AM (16 years, 4 days ago)

I had a little too much extra time on my hands, so I figured I'd throw a mix together for you guys. Let me know what you think. This is just some stuff I've been jamming here lately, and I tried to make it kinda cohesive so it can be enjoyed as one whole piece. Here's the link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ufil8h

Track list:

1. Tom Waits - Clap Hands A good tune with a nice chill feel and some killer laid back procussion. Check out the lyrics here.

2. Medeski, Martin, and Wood - End of the World Party A super-slick groove oriented, keyboard-centric jazz piece that will have you tapping a toe in no time. I dig the general melody, but the bass line can't be beaten and the trippy background effects just add to the cool factor.

3. Sepultura - Kaiowas These guys are typically known for jamming some heavy loud metal, but this is a tribal jam with lots of Brazilian drums. Listen to this loud and smoke a joint beforehand.

4. Iron And Wine - Wolves' Song of the Shepherd's Dog Never liked Iron and Wine until it became more than just a guy with an acoustic. Now it's awesome. Following in the Sep tune are more bits of exotic procussion. A little bluesy guitar, killer lyrics, some reggae inspiration in the composition... all 'round a good relaxer.

5. Chris Whitley and Jeff Lang - Road Leads Down A straightforward tune from two legendary bluesmen. Jeff Lang is big in Australia, and Chris Whitley just died in 2005. R.I.P. It's got kind of a negative message, but wait until Lang does his mean solo about halfway through the tune. That's Lang's voice dominating the song. You can just barely hear Whitley behind him.

6. Incubus - Deep Inside A song that captures the essence of tripping quite well. Super funky bass line, killer vocals (his best if you ask me), a wicked guitar solo at the end... just sublime stuff here. Too bad Incubus sucks huge balls now, but I guess you take what you can get.

7. - Stanton Moore - Magnolia Triangle I love acoustic bass and killer beats. This song has them both. There's an awesome part in here where the sax player just wails on his instrument and it sounds like he's strangling it. Fucking awesome.

8. Porcupine Tree - The Sound of Muzak This one speaks to me. Vocalist/guitarist Steven Wilson laments the state of the music industry and he couldn't be more right... all making use of a neo-70s prog style. Also includes a killer guitar solo. He tracks his voice for the chorus and it sounds so vintage '70s Floyd. I love it.

9. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood Very haunting tune. I don't really know what the lyrics are supposed to mean, but she sounds like an oldschool country singer and that gets me every time. Very ethereal.

10. Robert Plant and Allison Krauss - Through The Morning, Through The Night I know this is a cover, but I don't know who by. Anyone help me there? These two are a fucking awesome duo... bluegrass meets balls out rock (though Plant isn't balls out anymore). A sad story of lost love that suits these two so well. The vocal harmony here is also amazing. Sad song, but relaxing nonetheless.

11. Wilco - You Are My Face Another good relaxer. I like his voice a lot better later in the song when he goes balls out with it. The second half of the song is the best part. I always wanna jump up and do something when it starts to pick up.

12. Corrosion of Conformity - Senor Limpio A harder rocker from COC. Also classic rock-infused tune with some cool kick work on the bass drum. Pepper's voice on here is awesome! Generally up-beat tune.

13. Clutch - Never Be Moved I love Clutch. They're in my sig, I own everything they've ever released, and I can recite lyrics from memory easily. This is one of my hands-down favorite Clutch tunes. Amazing beat, organ solo, guitar solo, amazing vocals and lyrics... especially the lyrics brimming with wordplay and irony. "Cause St. Charles Darwin wrote that gospel down," Hahahahaha!

14. Opeth - For Absent Friends Opeth are normally known for heavy music, but this is a short acoustic passage that works very well as a transition point. Good on its own merits, but better between songs.

15. The National - Slow Show Baritone vocals and acoustic setup that ends an album well. The piano part at the end gives me cold chills when I hear it.

Hope you guys dig it. Let me know what you think.

Opeth into the National. Hahaha, that's weird, I like it. I  The National.

MM&W into Sepultura is a little odd too.

Odd, but I didn't realize how cohesive it would turn out till after I listened to it... wasn't even trying that hard and then I realized that it had a flow. That seems to happen to me when I make mixes.

I normally find self-bumping a little distasteful, but I put some work into that mix... so bump!
