Alternative Heating/Incubation
    #7942869 - 01/27/08 09:35 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hey there - Is there any decent forms of incubation other than the aquarium heater method? Are there some ways people have used everyday objects or house locations to help incubate? I know additional heat isn't absolutely necessary, but it does kinda help to lessen the wait, as it were. Any ideas?

yes search the forums.

incubating isn't a huge deal unless your house temp is in the 60's or so, but you already know that.

there are other methods, but not as many of them are as safe as aquarium heater/reptile pad because they aren't designed to run 24/7..

The top shelf of a bookshelf is usually near the ceiling where it's warmer.

I'm sure some will say its not the best idea, but I have been using a heating pad at the bottom of a old cooler. I have a tupperware tray lid over the pad so the jars don't sit right on the pad, holds them up about 1.5 inches. On low the temp stays 82-86 depending on the room temp.

My petri dish studies a few years ago showed that cubensis reaches peak linear growth between 75F and 80F, then is flat until 83F, where it starts to slow down. Mycelium at 86F is growing at about 2/3 the speed of mycelium at 80F. In addition, the higher temps tend to stimulate thermophic molds and bacteria.

Anywere in your home that is between 75F and 80F; most people dont even need an incubator.
