> Entoloma strictius
The preferred name for this one is Nolanea strictia according to Entolomoid Fungi of the Western US and Mushrooms Demystified.
I guess its the most common Nolanea in the bay area.
Good luck with the Auriscalpium.

Huh, good to know. It certainly looks more like Nolanea, but I was going by IF. Though, both records exist, there are no synonyms listed. I'll go with Nolanea though.
Post some of those photos somewhere. the M. acicula or whatever else you got shots of.

It is not possible for them to be a real pest, they are there eating the real pests.

yes, Curecat, are you an artist by any chance? If so, would you mind terribly sending some of your work my way? I'd love to see it.
I could do something like that with a pencil, but not in a million years do that with a knife. That takes some skill.
If you don't make art, you should think about it. If you do, make the right choice. PM me some .
Edit: Was it cold out when you took that video of the lady bugs? that would explain the clumping. A small lady bug is no match for the elements. But a whole load of them sticking together in a pile, moving around does.

RandomHero - Definitely check out the Mycological Societies in your area, and find out when they host Forays and Fairs. They are REALLY fun!!! And yeah, ladybugs eat aphids.
Thanks Drewwyann! I used to do a lot of art work, but for some reason, I've done very little since I was 12. I really would like to start up again. I mostly prefer sketches, but if I can move myself back into the arts I'd like to experiment more with other methods.
I did a little searching on the web, and yes, it does seem that they cluster up like that to keep warm. I've never heard of insects gathering in such large numbers for warmth. But yeah, it was very chilly out.

Actually, there are many species of ladybird beetle (its an entire beetle family, the Coccinellidae) and a few, like the Mexican bean beetle, do eat plants and are often serious agricultural pests. There are also a few that are benign in the garden but like to live in people's houses while they are swarming, and hence are a "pest" in that sense.

Yeah, I was reading that they like to cluster inside cracks in peoples homes. Hahaha!
There are indeed a hell of a lot of "ladybugs", which is why I didn't bother looking up the latin. Counting spots is one thing, but it wasn't that simple, there are far more subtle distinctions.
