HELP!! My friend just spawned rye berries to hpoo straw and coco coir. Pasteurized it for three hours let it cool in the pot. Took out put in a 25x17in sterlite bin. 3 days later he opened and there is a bit of a sour smell that he never smelt in the past. Is this normal in this phase. It's not a overpowering smell but it's there. What should he do with it. Get rid of it so as not to infect other bins that it's close too. There air tight so I'm not too worried.

I'd get rid of it to be safe. Sour is usually the first sign of bacterial contamination. Better safe than sorry ya know.
The longer contams sit in a house, the more they spread through the house and threaten future projects. This applies more to molds than bacteria since molds dump spores but I'd still scrap it and clean anything that has been in close proximity to the possibly contaminated material.
You should also know that I'm a wuss when it comes to funny smells and colors!
All it takes is a lil contamination to turn a good shroom into a very VERY bad shroom.

OMFG my friend dumped those sour smelling casings and the smell under and in the substrate was almost unbearable. It smelt exactly like rotten eggs. So let me get some thing straight the pasturization was perfect. So was the spawning. But the holes on top of the bin were blocked. They are 1/4in holes five of them covered with transpore tape. He has used the exact set up before and it turned out great. So my ? is. Was it the simple fact that the substrate during it's spawn run just didn't have any gas exchange. Thanx in advance.
