Lights off
    #7943005 - 01/27/08 09:56 PM (16 years, 5 days ago)

I've notice considerable faster growth when the lights are off compared to lights on. Not sure if its normal and expected or am I just imagining it.

It's true. That's why it is important to use roughly a 12/12 cycle. Mycelium has circadian rythyms just like mammals. Growth is much faster during the period of darkness with most of the species I've grown.

Makes mornings so much more exciting!

Alright thanks, I have a timer for 12/12 but since I'm in same room and usually up most of the night it's getting more indirect light than it probably should.

I'll try to change my habits and keep that in mind.

Well, you could always get a cardboard box and put it over your grow chamber before you turn the lights on!

Go to your local landfill and find their cardboard recycling dumpster. Just be careful about your selection.. it IS trash ya know. Look for a box that had something like new furniture or something in it... nothing organic and nothing that looks like it's been rained on! Also, I'm not sure about this but, it may be considered stealing in some states so keep that in mind!

Or if you aren't a cheap SOB, just go to a UPS store and buy one! lol

If my chamber wasnt a 4 tier greenhouse i'd consider it but it'd be too much of a bitch covering it up all the time.

dont bother with cardboard, you can go to home depot and get black plastic sheets which all you will need to do is throw it on top of the martha, they'll keep all the light out and they are light enough that you can drape them around the entire martha fairly easily.

It's not necessary to drape. After all, outdoors they're exposed to quite a bit of light on and around the full moon. Just make sure they have roughly 12 hours of bright light, and at least a few hours of dark. Ambient room light won't hurt anything, just avoid directing it right at them.

Thanks that gives me an idea. I'll try to get some mylar thats black/white, and wrap it around. I have a 12 inch fluorescent lamp right above that can be wrapped within. That way I just leave it on and wont worry about it even gives it a little stealth.
