Accepting your own death
    #7942173 - 01/27/08 07:26 PM (16 years, 5 days ago)

I think one of the hardest things for us humans to grasp is the concept of death. We have to accept/ignore that we are going to die.

We can make this theories like "reincarnation". Truthful that is possible, nobody knows yet but we do know that accepting our inevitable deaths is something that is certainly not easy.

Honestly, where are you at?

Does it scare you? Are you ignoring it. Have you meditated on the thoughts and truly come to terms with them. Is there another way of thinking about it?

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I think about it constantly. And over time i notice that the thought scares me less and less, but when it comes down to the thought of non existence i almost have a panic attack. All you can do is keep dosing until you get it right.

Someone on this forum once made a comment on a similar thread to this one. I can honestly say that it's helped change my view on death. He stated something along the lines of....

"Im not afraid to die....i wanna know what happens, hopefully it isnt for a while".

I never read or heard anyone state "I wanna" with death in the same sentence except for "I wanna go to heaven" or "I wanna not die"

BUt to say you want to see what happens is a powerful remark. Yes I am slightly afraid of what is going to happen. I dont know if god exists, and i dont know how "Intense" the other side will be. I do believe that we get Reborn. Its a sign of life that happens over and over again. You can see rebirth in christianity (Baptism), Nature (Death of Trees then comming to life), ect.

Being Reborn im starting to see is what happens alot on earth, and there is nothing more awsome, forgiving or wonderful as the idea of getting another chance. Im not ready to die for a while. But by the time I die I want to be able to do one of the following on my death bed....

Crack a Joke

Laugh and be excited for the Ultamite Spiritual Experiance

Almost come to Tears and Pray I get to experiance the awsomeness of being human again!

in all honesty, i don't *think* it's possibly for anyone to come to terms, 100%, with their death until it occurs, and even then i doubt a lot of people do

I'm pretty good at facing death, as a lot of people around me have died and I've come pretty close myself on several occasions. I got hit by a car when I was 11 years old, and I had no awareness of it aside from a sort of dreamy image of the car swerving, myself feeling weightless and thinking "wow, i'm so lucky i'm standing here and that car didn't hit me just now." Which of course is totally hilarious because when that car swerved I was unconscious on the road. So anyways, I guess the point is that dying isn't scary because the body has all kinds of wonderful coping mechanisms that make it not scary-- your brain becomes saturated in all sorts of fantastic drugs.

I'm also completely comfortable with the concept of non-existence. I definitly don't want to die anytime soon though, and so I suppose I am afraid of the prospect of dying young... maybe half the reason I'm comfortable with death is that I imagine it to be something that'll happen in the distant future.

Death! You mean *gulp* we all die? (I am in a whimsical mood tonight, can ya tell?)

I prefer to remain in total denial. Life is something special and beautiful and worth celebrating. Death intrudes by taking loved ones without our permission. While I understand that certain moments cause us to contemplate it and I have had my share of those same as everyone else, my preference is to not dwell on it.

Oh I did the "dark period" during my late teens. A time when most of us really comprehend we are mortal. But I have had too much death around me to want to dwell on it any more.

And the thing is, until it happens we will never know what's waiting for us. We can guess and speculate but it's all a futile exercise.

It's story time!!

So Chuang Tzu had a story, which I'm sure is an old story but this is where I got it from...

basically there's 2 ppl, one likes to party and embellishes in material things and then there's the rustic, naturalist who sips on the morning dew of leaves for sustinence.

blablabla... the partier came down with a disease, hospitalized, and dying.  His dying was the most painful thing imaginable as everything he held so much value in, materialistic shit, was leaving him...  he didn't know himself.

Story goes on... rustic was attacked by a tiger, who tore his skin off.  He lay propped aside a tree and smiled as his life fainted away.  He knew himself and was fine.

moral of the story, find out who you are.

i have had dreams where i died. and afterwrods everything was dark, but i knew something was coming/going to happen (or felt like something was) i don't know what to believe in, actively as religion (i am agnostic) but it really felt like something was up.

whenever i think about dying i get this intense feeling that it just feels like while alive/human i wouldn't be able to handle.. like if i got the feeling that death brough while i was alive i would go fucking insane. sometimes it gives me the feeling so strongly and mysteriously i have to stop thinking about it, as interesting this feeling is to me.

i am completely at terms with the fact that i will one day die,
and hold very tightly that it is the greatest mystery that will be answered to me (consciously or not).

Ultimately, I'd like to be able to feel like my life is so full that it'd be ok to die at any moment, and not project my death into some deferred and distant future. I think that would be liberating. I'm almost in that place, but not quite.

i feel like i could die at any time,
but i don't really WANT to.

I think that coming to terms with one's immortality occurs along a gradient, not all at once. Some of us must be forcibly moved along in the process by major health issues, accidents, etc...while others notice the cycle of change going on around them & progress on their own.

I would say that I am closer to acceptance than I was 20 years ago, but probably not as close as I will be 20 years from now. I was given a 50/50 chance of surviving childbirth complications 14 years ago, and this experience moved me into direct confrontation with my own mortality.
