Rye grain jars
    #7941721 - 01/27/08 06:08 PM (16 years, 5 days ago)

I've got some jars colonizing in ziplock bags in an extra measure of avoiding contamination. My jars are colonizing rather slowly and my last batch stalled after shaking. Think it's gas exchange? If so i'm gonna take them out of the bags. Also I know to shake at "25% colonization" but I can't really eyeball 25%. Heres a picture of one of my jars, should I shake it or wait longer? Last jars I shook at what I thought was a good percentage never recovered. Maybe I shook them too early or no gas exchange? Anyways heres the picture.

that jar is way past 25 percent. and get those jars out of bags. aluminum foil on top is not necessary either. they can't breath. your suffocating your babies man.

Yea bro totally do not keep them in bags just make sure they have tyvek on top to keep out contam's. And since you didn't shake that jar at 25% I would just let it keep colonizing.

you can shake that.. pretty much you just shake to distribute the colonized grains and to keep it from forming one solid mass..

it is my understanding that fresh air exchange is essential for grains.. mine stalled as well until i opened them up and gave them holes to breathe..

i think it's debatable though.. and i'm sure someone will come after me and debate it. or tell me that i'm flat out wrong.

but if it works for me.. i only go by my own experiences, not what other people say.

yes they need to breath, otherwise they will start having a fermenting smell in them and take an extra few days to recover

I shook them already. So maybe the ones I shook 6 days ago that have seemingly stalled will recover. Thanks for the info guys.

They are not ready if you can see grains. Wait until there is a thick overlay around 110% of your grains before birthing or g2G.

I wasn't asking if they were 100% colonized. Read before you post, thanks.
