I think a forum dedicated to photography, style/techniques/equipment/composition & general photo sharing and expierences with photography includng how you've taking the photo's and weird and outrageous things you've done to get a great shot. I dont think such a catagory really fits in Music/Art because there's more to photography then art. So I think being a democratic community as we are I think a vote is in order.
Absolutely, its long over do.

I like this idea, but there has to be strict rules ... i.e., no scat or anything distasteful.
-------------------- Here's where the site administrators announce changes to the website. You can also post your opinions and suggestions about how we can make the Shroomery better. This is not a forum to contest disciplinary action. Please use our support ticket system for such matters, providing as much related information as possible.

When I had a supporter account I was planning on making my shroomery.org webpage a spot for all of my photographs. Unfortunately.. I suck at HTML. I think it is a good idea, though I feel like it might be better to incorporate it into Music, Art and Lit.

That depends ... If the forum is mainly about cameras and differences in shutter speed, etc. then it should go in SciAndTech If it's about various photos of nature and stuff, then it should go into MusicArtandLit Maybe link them to both!

PHOTO FORUM! That would be wonderful. It's allow us to discuss photograhpy techniques, skills, discuss equipment and show off our general galleries. Great idea.

My only beef with subforums is they go un-noticed. Look at the Outdoors subforum in Gathering and Travel. It's used once a week, if that, while the gathering is posted in multiple times a day.

yeah there is tons more involved, then just the physical dynamics of the camera itself, there is much to talk about, like famous photographers, personal expierences, cultivate idea's about shooting nature itself. Getting close to wild animals is an art, and is very hard thing to do. I think we because have a Sports forum there should definitely be a photography forum. :P

well lets think about that, photography is just an instrument to art, I guess, with that being said you might aswell involve a subforum for guitar, drums, canvas painting etc... I just think that photography is used daily for most folks and is used in so many applications, plus people are always upgrading and buying new ones and this could involve a good place to get quality information from individuals with experience.

the music, art and literature forum is almost purely music lately, anything else gets pushed off the page. I'd love to see something made for photography, because it's generally a little slower paced too.

Art and photography should be a forum separate from music.... Music has a lot of threads and posts, and the art posts are sunk to the bottom of the forum in the matter of a few hours.... Both the photography and the art mixed would most likely be suited to keep up with each other better than being grouped in with music....
Edit: An Audio forum, and a Visual forum....
For what it means, shot down or not, that is my 2 cents....

Geo hasn't even said anything in this thread.
That's pretty fucking ridiculous. Look at the support its getting in the poll.
I should have read this thread before I posted in the "Why?" thread.

The Why Thread didn't make sense to me. Why complain about the Money forum? If you don't like a forum, don't go there. And besides, life outside is what counts, not what happens in here.

I said:
Quote:
Its true. The principle mission of this site at the time of its creation is very simple:
stopping the spread of misinformation about mushrooms.
As far as the community that has spawned forth from it has always been treated very open-minded-ly and unbiased-ly by the administration.
For a while, users were even able to create their own forums. Moderators were elected. The administrators from Ythan, Aphex, Thor, always upheld a very conservative approach to censorship and should be remembered for it.
OTD as ugly as it can be, and for the very reason that it can be ugly, is an important aspect of this community. It serves as a polarization for people on the other side of a social spectrum.
Both types are free to use the site and do.
The admins have always had the general idea that if a forum has potential for success, and is not themed around hate, its given a shot.
And this is good because it allows us to learn about our community and to open our own minds. Mushrooms are what we all have in common (or would if not for ODD and crap), and these are the people who use them. Some are successful in business, some give a shit about politics, some support Bush, some have scat fetishes, some pick their noses, some are doctors, lawyers, gypsies, gays, etc.
Never mind I guess. It really makes no sense not to give this idea a shot. People like to look at pictures. Members of this board are really good at taking pictures. It makes no sense not to do it.
Maverick is absolutely right. The media forum moves really fast and is very broad. It hurts nothing to try it out. What gives?

Sorry for not responding to this thread sooner, I wasn't intentionally ignoring it. I see what you mean about how composition, equipment, darkroom techniques and that kind of thing doesn't really seem to fit in with the existing Arts forum. Photography definitely has a technical side to it. But the same argument could be made for most forms of art... composition is a factor with any visual medium, equipment can include musical instruments, paints and brushes, Sound Forge, Photoshop, even special pens and paper for the writers among us. It seems to me like the real distinction is between 'artists' and 'media', ie. creators of art and consumers of art. I think a better solution might be if we make Music Art & Literature the 'popular media' forum for reviews and interpretations and that kind of thing, and then make a subforum for artists themselves which focuses on the artistic process, sharing personal works and getting feedback, etc. Does that make any sense?

But then where would discussion of various camera types, filmography, lighting style, etc. fit in? I was hoping for a broad range of views to be included, like how to take the photo, what type of camera to use, how to touch up the photo, including said photo in online presentations, etc.
I have no problem with this being a subforum, just as long as people know where to go when they have a question or comment regarding photography and film. If you feel that Music and Arts should be the host category, I'll go along with that.

I think that is a good idea. Looking at the MAL forum right now, it appears that all of the posts on the first page are fan-based as opposed to artist-based. To me, this implies that splitting the forum in the way you mention would allow the discussion of the arts to fall into the two categories very well.
I think its worth trying that aay and see how it goes.

I think a forum for Mass Media and a separate forum for Artists in in order.
Sub-forums = fail.

would you consider changing the name of the current main forum to something like "The Arts" and then having a few subforums ie: photography, painting and sculpture, music, literature? or something to that effect. just an idea.

i agree we should have a photography forum. when i first got into photography i did general searches on the shroomery & could only find scattered posts here & there from the entire community forums. it would have been nice to go to a dedicated forum...

40oz becarefull buying from those sites, I found a couple of them and after almost buying them, and talking to them on the phone, some of them dont come with a battery and then when you want to buy the battery its 119$ or some of them are coming from china and not directly from the site and it'll take 6 weeks. There are lil things that make up for its cheapness. However the xti is an excellent camera and I'm in the market for the same, the best bet in my professional opinion is just to look and wait and watch on ebay for a good deal, from someone who knows what they;re talking about ,. Make sure to get a shutter count when buyin camera's from ebay though.

theres a cheaper on, I would just say 40 that you make sure you call em up and talk to em first, make sure they have it in stock and its not coming from china which takes 6 weeks to ship.
also check out some ebay action;
http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-EOS-Digital-Rebel-XTI-400D-SLR-w-18-55mm-1GB-KIT_W0QQitemZ290203075238QQihZ019QQcategoryZ147173QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I'd also love to mod the photo forum if it ever happens.

So here's a question for our new Photography Forum:
What's the best camera to take to a concert, without it being obvious that you're there to take photos?

I have cameras on both of my cell phones which I might be able to carry in, but those aren't nearly as good as a professional camera.

Maybe someone can explain to me why this forum is such an abhorrent idea, why is it that the FAGS forum exists despite not having had one post made in it since November of last year. I mean the whole concept of that subforum was the exact same thing as the Culinary Arts Forum (which incidentally took forever to get the administrators to create) except that it allowed for self-proclaimed culinary wizards to suck each other's cocks.
I mean at the very least, this idea has its own purpose and appeal to a specific demographic that is not currently represented on these boards.
So please, feel free to explain that discrepancy openly here in front of the community this administration allegedly serves and represents.

Word is that they are going to add a Photography sub-category to the Art forum so you can browse by category and it would be just like a "photography" forum.

That's fine with me. There's too many forums as it is. Besides there are countless dedicated photography forums out there. Google.

That's exactly why there should not. In a week another guy will come around and be all like "Hey, there's a photography forum on this site, now where the hell is my birdwatching forum?"
Too bad the Shroomery administration's stance on new forum creation is so inarticulate and ambiguous.

It's an optical illusion. You have to stare at the Art Forum for 30 minutes, then the Photography section will mysteriously appear.
