    #7940173 - 01/27/08 12:51 PM (16 years, 5 days ago)

Ok guys this is my first post on this site I just think this site is the shit and everyone is very helpful. This is my first grow and I have some pictures of my cakes. They have been out of the jars since the 18th and I have no sign of pins yet. O and also the one cake has been dunked and rolled in vermiculite three days ago

looking good, did you lower the temp to 70 or cold shock them, that always gets mine to pin

Aye, Dunk'N'Roll the ones that you haven't (as long as they have no pins yet).

Also, FYI, you could easily fit another cake in there and prolly put 3 more in total without any problems.

I know you prolly only have the 5 cakes total but if you were wondering, there ya go

Lastly, I don't see any holes for gas exchange...
Are you fanning the interior so provide fresh air to your cakes at least 3 times a day? If you are, you're golden. If the CO2 level is too high, that can prevent pin formation! happened to me before.

Edit: Oh yeah, and make sure they are gettin light for atleast 8 hours. I've found that 12 hours works best for me but anything less than 8 and I usually have trouble getting my cakes to pin. (Maybe that's just me tho)

Any mushroom that fruits in the tropics during the summer does not need to be 'cold shocked'. That is for cold weather edibles, and temperate climate wood lovers such as Azurescens.

Cubensis are a tropical fruiting mushroom. Cold shocking cubensis to improve fruiting is a myth. Any kind of performance increase in pinning you noticed from "cold shocking" is more likely due to the fact that you probably did what just about every other grower here does and dunked them for 24 hours in the fridge. The only reason its done in the fridge is to lower the risk of contamination by preventing bacterial bloom.

Dunking cakes longer than 24 hours in the fridge is almost overkill, all those colder temps do after a while is slow things down.

I'm sure you guys have seen stuff about cold shocking on here before, but the truth is that it does nothing for Psilocybe cubensis. Any of the old hands around here, the guys who have grown for 35+ years, will tell you.

There's misinformation on this site. It happens, every post can't be policed to make sure the poster knew what he or she was talking about. Try not to take everything on here as immediate fact the moment you read it, it's always good to use the search to see if there are any threads by the pros that clear things up.

Wow you guys respond fast! ok some more info they are B+ and I do have air holes. I have been reading all day and I think I need more light. I only have the light set for 4 hours a day so I think I need to bump it up. Also the light is on top of the lid that wont effect it right?

Mushrooms are photo-tropic or in other words, grow towards the light.
4 hours a day is more than, sufficient. Check your messages.

I have found that I personally get best results with 50/50 light/dark periods but it really shouldn't take much to make them pin. You could try the longer light exposure, it won't hurt, but it may not help either! lol It's just my personal preference.

As for the light on the lid... as long as it's not so close to the shroomies when they grow up that it's heating them up, you'll be fine. Don't want the tops of your shrooms baking from the heat of the bulb!

Ultimately, everyone finds what works for them. Consider this your "experimental" batch and have fun with it. Refine with each batch you make. There are a million ways to grow and it usually boils down to what you feel most comfortable doing and what your personal results are.

Enjoy the process and Good Luck!
