Thank you for posting this interesting paper.
Of special interest to prospective chromatographers is page 5, where, in the fourth
paragraph, the author states that "Systems A & B gave superior resolution...".
The author used silica gel 60 F-254 TLC plates with
methanol-NH4OH (28% ammonia) (100:1.5) (A) and
n-propanol-5% aq. NH4OH (5% ammonia) (5:2) (B).
System B can be modified to: 99% isopropanol-5% ammonia (5:2) and should provide
equal results.
The isopropanol is 99% rubbing alcohol from the pharmacy and the 5% ammonia is twice as
strong as common 2.4% household ammonia, and should be available as AMEX (r) pure
window cleaning ammonia (without additives) from hardware not grocery stores.
In the past, 2.4% household ammonia yielded poor results.

Only 99% isopropanol-28% ammonia-water (10:3:3) gave good results in the past, so no

Anyone trying this new solvent system for Thin Layer Chromatography or for
Paper Chromatography (using coffee filter paper strips), please post results.

Thank you for posting this info mjshroomer.
I do not believe I have came across this mushroom before or yet.
This mushroom stains blue and blue/green, even on the cap.
And often growing in fairy rings.

Attention Mr. Mushrooms,
Well now that i remember reading the part about this mushroom staining blue/green on the caps,
My suspected pan casters do not ever stain blue on the caps, They do however show an light bright azure blue color staining at the base of the stems mycelium..on the mycelium only, never does the actual mushroom stain blue just the mycelium at the base of the stems.
So, I suppose that we can check this mushroom off of the list of other possibilities..

It would be interesting to find out where the
sod used in this area is originally grown. I wonder
if this Cope has been found outside of Dade County.

The original sod came from M and M sod company in the okechobee area of florida. I have been searching extensively in all of the sod transplanted into dade county from this area of origin with no luck.
I don't know if it has been picked since the late 1970's? That decade was cooler then average for south florida.
Apparently it grows on EVERGLADES SOIL associated with Sod, and NO MANURE.
I am keeping my Eyes focused on any new turf being planted in Dade county, that originated from farms in the everglades. Might have to visit the farms themselves!!!

Hey mj, there is a program called omniscan that uses OCR technology. It can take scanned images and create txt documents and is fairly easy to use. PM me if you have any questions.

HI, I have that but I can scan a page faster than a page of text. I am currently working on several projects at one time and do not have time to wait on text.

you can always convert it later, I guess. I thought that was what you meant by "doing text." If you want clearer text you could bump up the contrast or adjust curves in photoshop. Most of the scans look pretty good.
(edit: good scans are the key to speedy ocr'ing. If you have really good scans it doesn't take long to convert them with omniscan, perhaps you could do them in batches if you save these for archives. I know you're busy, but in the long run it is much more efficient to have them as txt because of the file size and you can copy and paste information as needed. You know what works best for you, I just wanted to share my experience)

I have be telling all Miami and Fort Lauderdale Shroom hunters about this mushroom.
I also suspect that the people in Naples should be looking for this Shroom, Copelandia chlorocystis.
Never ever ever have i come across this mushroom here in Sarasota.
I know what the Everglade mud is.. it is kind of like black playdoe.
If i was in the Miami area i would definately be looking for it.

According to Bob Weeks, one of the authors of the Cope paper, I shroomed with him in hunting adventures in Florida in 1979, it is somewhat similar to Copelandia cyanescens at least macroscopically and is most likely common in manure as the Cope cyans are. Bob mentioned the fact that he thought there was no manure present ointhe soil, but again ther could have been liquid fertilizers inthe soil where they were found..
Bob Weeks also thought they were probably common in maure because he said they did resemble blue meanies he had found in many fields in florida.
The drawings used int he paper were not good and based on written desc riptions rather than from seeing the shrooms when they were fresh.

I have not had any contack with Mr. Weeks since those days, although I thingk I do have a letter form him somewhere in my mail files. It woudl take a miracle to find that letter and I am not sure of the contents or what is in his letters. I remember ttwo letters with his address in Florida on them from 1979
He says the same can said about C. westii.
It grows very few and only a chanc e look at some specimesn could reveal that it was present other than the C . cyanescens. Which is the dominatrix shroom off the genera.

They are all relatives of P. cyanescens and are basically really indistiuishable to soem with the naked eye.
Like FM Farms run by Mr. G who claims to have a field of Copelandia tropicalis. When the mushroom is usually found on an averaged of one to every few hundred p. cyanescens shrooms..

Yes they are being searched for in all new sod transplanted from the Okeechobee region of Florida into the Miami area from Homestead all the way up to the DADE/Broward line.
Mainly finding Pan. acuminatus, but zero chlorocystis!!!
I don't think they have been found since the late 1970's?
On a side note, the MR.G tropicalis is not a tropicalis, but it is not a common Florida cyanescens either. And it is common in his field, growing at a different time of the year, along with the cyanescens. Common enough that he sent me four different prints of it. It differes macroscopically and microscopically from all the other variants in circulation.

The paper's that mjshroomer posted give away a few exact locations where the original collections from the 70's occured.
I was near Miami last weekend but it was only at the nighttime and we didn't stop.

Most of these mushrooms are temporary. They come with the sod and soil, and tend to die off quickly. They traced them back to the point of origin by tracking the sod.
Collections were made originally on NEW sod planted at the marine biology facility on Key Biscayne, and then the Fruit and Spice park. The next collections were made on the FARM that grew the SOD.
Most of the SOD down here in the Miami area is only productive for a few months. It is rare to find the imported fungus fruiting the next year with any regualrity.
Lawn companies butcher the properties down here. Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and CHEMICAL fertilizers turn Miami into a Waste land for fungi. You have to get to the turf within a month or two of planting, and during heavy rains.
I still find the occasional acuminatus popping it's head up on OLD ESTABLISHED TURF in mall parking lots, but maybe ONE or two per year, per turf bed.
I am continuing my search throughout any and all properties that have new sod, maybe I'll get lucky.

Urea is found in urine of some animals. It's used as fertilizer sometimes. It was the first organic chemical to be synthesized in a lab. It's not really a bad thing. You've probably already got plenty of urea in your body.

I'm bouncing this one back to the top here..
with some questions (Im just looking at Page 3);
When it says they grow in fairy rings, does that mean they grow in large rings the size of a hoola-hoop, or small rings the size of dinner plates?
Next, it says they grow from June to March... that's sort of a strange season wouldn't you say?
Next, are there actual specimens of the mushrooms stored at this University of Miami Marine Lab?
-Is it possible to go there are request to see them?
Last, do any of you know how to make heads or tails of the gill plate picture, with your own scopes? T?

The herbariums are refrenced in the journal article. The marine biology school was just a property they were picked at.
Fairy rings? I never found any lawn pans growing in rings. Solitary to haphazardly grouped at best.
The season in Miami is all year, with maybe January being a down time, if no irrigation is present on the property. If it rains they will come.
Picture? Do you mean the drawing of the gill fragment with a typical Copelandia pleurocystidia imbedded through it. Supposedly they have green apexes, don't know why he choose to color the entire metuloid(pleurocystidia).
The macro is what confuses me. It looks like a squat version of the typical lawn pan(our mystery buddy). Doesn't look like any copelandia?
I guess you could try and request access, but possession is illegal, and We don't have a license to research.
Maybe MJ could get access, or get us in? I know I am not walking in without a IN.
I still look for them when ever I go hunting!!! But it has been over two decades since they were found last.
OR our mystery pan might be the remnants of that mushroom. Only major difference is spore number, which is not fixed in stone. The mystery pan does have vestigial pleurocystidia that are green!!!
MJ says he picked them. DID THEY RESEMBLE OUr MYSTERY PAN macroscopically?
