You know, you must dehydrate the epsom salt befor use. You see, the epsom salt you buy at the drug store is MgSO4-7H2O. You want to get rid of the water so that the MgSO4 can suck the water out of the alchohol. You can get dehydrated MgSO4 by placing epsom salts in a pan and heating it on a stove. You'll see it melt down as the water boils off. After a few minutes, you'll have a chulky powder. Shake that up with the alcohol, let sit for a few minutes, filter and repeat this a few times to get it compleatly dry alcohol.

"You'll see it melt down as the water boils off."
Hmmm, my epsom salt never melted when baked. I baked it at 400 for 65 mins and it just turned white and turned into 1 huge block.
As for removing water from alcohol i would imagin just having the epsom salt in a air-tight container with your alcohol would suck out the water. I dont think having epsom salt right in the alcohol is good, not sure why it just doesnt sound like a good idea.....

If you heat the epsom salt in a pan, you'll see it liquifyas the water boils off. If you use enough salt, it wont disolve in the solution. A little bit of salt will always make it through, especially if using coffee filters.

What about silica? In reply to:

Im trying that now with silica and 70% rubbing alcohol, Ill test it by putting a drop of it on some glass and comparing its evaporation to a drop that wasn't in the silica chamber.

Interesting, do you think it will work with silica?

Actually, I believe alcohol needs a significantly lower temperature than water to freeze, so you can simply stick it in your freezer and pour out the booze. I could be wrong, though.

You're on the right track, actually...
Procedure: put the aq. alc in the freezer & let it freeze. then chip the ice & put in a strainer. Let half of it melt. the melted liquid contains most of the alcohol, I started with 10% & got up to 40 % that way in a few runs. Not a success tho: the yeast flavor got concentrated too, so I just used it for herbal tinctures.
Best results: build a still! I'm designing one right now but don't want to mess it up. I've read aluminium cooling tubes are the best: no flavor like with copper or steel.

Why not set up a simple fration distilation as alchol evaporates at 75c and water at 100c. So it should be realy simple to extract.

Umm.. You can most certainly produce over 96% alcohol through distillation. It can be done with a little effort. How then do you suppose they distill high proof liquors if not like that? And there's no reason why you couldn't drink the resultant liquid. It sure wouldn't taste like candy but it wouldn't kill you. I've also heard from many people about freezing low proof alcohol and pouring out a higher proof product. I've talked to someone who put barrels of apple cider in a freezing mountain stream and let them tumble. Then they poured out what was left and were left with an apple brandy. It's not a perfect way to do it but it works well enough.
