An Empire of Goo
So this is a 50 Square KM 'pond' of tar sand 'tailings'. It can be seen from space.

Ancient man built the pyramids and the Great Wall of China.
Both visible from space.
Pffft!!!
Our Giant Tar Pit will be our monument to the ages!
Its shiny black grandeur will last long after our petty lives have been transformed into dust.
Be proud to live during such great times!!

I've been there, and seen it. So much water is diverted to get the oil out of the sand. Good to know that somebody is waking up.

I knew there was a super efficient 6:1 water ratio but I was under the impression that the reclamation process was a tad more stringent then the 'make oil sludge pond' method.

Watch the movie Soylent Green and maybe you can get some idea of what life might be like without the diesel fuel and gasoline needed to plow the fields, harvest the crops and transport the food. Are there too many people on earth for all of us to go back to an agrarian way of life? Would you want to do that or just procrastinate and eventually die from the cold, starvation, disease and malnutrition?

This is a critique on efficiency and process.
Not a condemnation of use.

From the article you linked to:
But there's a collective guilt over damage being done for future generations
A recent survey by Cambridge Strategies Inc. also found that Albertans want habitat protection and capture and storage of greenhouse-gas emissions made key conditions for future oil sands development.
