Of course. Weren't you aware that our country pays strict attention to a calendar written by an ancient race of people? Face it - come 2012, we're all fucked!

Wouldn't all moons? The moon is the 'moon' because it was the first one ever observed and it was defined as such. Thats how I think of it at least.

And then, you would have to consider that our Sun rotates in orbit around the center of the Milky Way, and that, in turn, rotates around ... who knows what.

Wikipedia: "A binary system is an astronomical term referring to two objects in space (usually stars, but also planets, galaxies or asteroids) which are so close that their gravitational interaction causes them to orbit about a common center of mass. Some definitions (e.g. that of double planet, but not that of binary star) require that this center of mass is not located within the interior of either object. A multiple system is like a binary system but consists of three or more objects."
Since the moon is close to the earth and relatively big for a moon, the center of gravity between them isn't on earth.
Pluto/Charon is also considered under this defintion.

Sorry mang, but you lose this argument. The Moon is being carried around the Sun by the Earth.

I was just saying it's a double planet, not that it rotates the sun, I copied and pasted that bullshit without reading it. Maybe there's some scientific basis behind that statement you're considering that I'm not aware of.

that statement is trying to say that the earth has nothing to do with carrying the moon. with if that were the case then why do we have tides?

Wait, wait. I re-read it. Keyword: concert. Meaning it rotates BOTH. Don't argue with that, the sun DOES exert grav on it. That's all it means.

Tides have nothing to do with what orbits the sun
The moon-earth system co-orbit the sun.
The moon would orbit the sun if the earth wasnt here.
The force the sun exerts on teh moon is greater than the force the earth exerts on the moon.
Done.

the moon effects the earth and vice versa. if the moon had a greater force than the earth then we would be orbiting the moon instead of the other way around....

Right. But carefully consider read was said, and my conclusion. It is not the earth that makes the moon go around the sun. The force the sun has on the moon is greater than the force the earth has on the moon. The pull from the sun is twice as strong as the pull from the earth. This means that the moon would continue on its path just fine without the earth, and it is not the earth that drags it around the sun.
Not trying to be a dick and beat this over your head, just clearing up some facts.

i think we're fighting over different things... your talking mainly about the force of the sun... and im trying to get at the fact that the earth holds the moons orbit. idk
