Contam Question
    #793581 - 08/03/02 02:45 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I have two small terrariums, and in one of them I think I have a contamination problem. My 1/2 pint aussie cakes aren't fruiting much in that terrarium, and I've already thrown one cake out for getting a greenish-gray mold on it. It also was moldy on the bottom and picked up about an eight of a cup of perlite with it when I removed it. Now I think the mold might be in another cake. Anyone ever had these problems? Should I scoop the perlite out where the bad cakes were growing? Should I get new perlite or bake it in the oven?

Damn the mold!!!

don't bother trying to sterlize your perlite in the oven--too messy and too much work. just go buy another bag. and add some hydrogen peroxide to the water that you wet the perlite with. also, don't put the cakes directly on the perlite. try to use something that will still allow moisture to get to the bottom of the cakes, like a wire screen/mesh, while avoiding direct contact of the cake with the perlite. this will help reduce the spread of contams to other cakes if you get them, plus i hear aussies like to grow from the bottoms of cakes too, so it will help in that respect.
